just wondering if anyone knows how to join snatch straps together, & get them apart again!! without using shackles(flying Missiles) . a mate mentioned he"d seen some one join 2 together using a rolled up news paper intwined in the loops somehow, but can remember how to do it.

Hold one strap in your left hand and one in your right. Place one loop inside the other loop until they visually form one loop. Feed a magazine or newspaper in between, pull snug.

the way that comes across doesnt sound right.

Feed the end of strap (1) through the loop of strap (2). Feed the other end of (2) through the loop of (1). Pull through. In between the two loops place a newspaper or something firm but not hard.

Get it - I hope thats right. Can do for real, but its hard to explain in text without pics. There was a write up in 4wd monthly.

Sounds right to me - like you, I can do it, but can't explain it. I typically drape a picnic blanket over the wood I use - don't know that it'll make a difference if something lets go, but it makes me feel better.

I'll see if I can explain it . Sounds like fun. Any way lay your straps end to end on the gound. As heath said name them strap 1 and strap 2. Grab the end of strap 1 and feed it through the eye of strap 2. Keep hold of the end of strap 1. Grab the other end of strap 2 and feed it through the eye of strap 1 that you are holding. Pull them together and they should pull on each other. Put a rolled up newspaper in between the two straps and pull them tight. The reason for the newspaper or magazine is so you can get the straps apart when your finished. Hope that sounds alright. It does to me anyway.

Yeh I can just see the big coight finding something "firm but not hard" to put in the loops

nah go and use your shackles,

a scout won't have enough grunt to break anything.......

I often see this method in magazines and even 4wd tv showed this method. But then your relying on the strength of the paper/magazine to keep them together. If it's not strong enough then you could end up flying backwards of the rock ledge etc.

I would rather risk having 2 straps stuck together than take any risk.

Not having a go at you. Just that I often hear of this and think it's just plain wrong.

The magazine etc. doesn't take the weight, the loops on the straps do that, it just stops them from jamming together

Straps still take all the load, thats why u don't want a large circumference item between them as it creates lateral strains, paper/magazine prevents them completing the knot and "welding" together with the heat of energy used in recovery, mind you can still be a pain to open em up again.

Ive done it with a wet newspaper. Still snatched OK.
Normally use a stick off the ground.
The shear strength is very high.
