I hate leafsprings!

Well firstly spent all of yesterday trying to remove the leaf spring bolt, which was seized in place by the collar inside the factory bush, which I will bet has never been replaced - I ended up cutting that with an angle grinder.

Then the bolt joining the leaves together wouldn't fit through the hole in the spring seat, so I had to file that out, as I have minimal tools and didn't have a bit big enough to just drill through. (i.e. took ages)

Now I can't quite manage to locate the new bolt, the diff just doesn't want to come forwards enough, I'll sort it when the old boy gets home, but jeez, it's taken me two 1/2 days just to get one spring in, every bolt I touch is seized, and it's just basically a bugger of a job and I'm close to throwing in the towel on it... anyone got any advice to help me on the way with the other 3 springs I've got left?

Had the sane prob on mine but only the fixed end at the rear springs was siezed. Grinder is only way and BFH.

With the springs. I put the fixed end on first and then the shackle end. After that located the diff.

If ya doing it fri or sat. Gimme a buz as I got both off. Gotta go get my 1ltr case but thats all at moment. PM me for number

cheers

That has got to be the best advice I have heard in ages. Just lub it up heaps. And remember to lub it even more when you put it back in!

Don’t give up coz it will be worth it

it's all been doused in WD for about 3 days now, the collars over the bolt on the fixed end of the leaf was just rusted solid, I'll pop into bunnings on the way to work and stock up on cutting discs and maybe a bigger farkin hammer ;)

my two first cars were from the 60s so I learnt that lesson quick  Everything that needs to be is plenty covered in moly grease so at least I'll be right if I need to take em out

I'll stick with it cos my olds are kickin my arse to get it out of the garage
:?

"Inox" spray works better than WD40 when it comes to rusty bolts.
Costs a bit more but is good stuff!
But oxy or grinder is the only way sometimes.

1. dont loose your cool and belt things you may want later ..
2. Beer (you need a little lubrication) also when your getting frustrated .. hop up and get a drink, have a smoke etc ... it's amazing what a little thought and a change of perspective can do for just suck probs.
3. Mates with good tools and willing to lend a hand in time of need are worth their weight in gold
4. Never seaze (or its like) when thing are going back together.
5. A small hand winch to pull the diff forward\backward
7. time to re-visit 1 and 2
8. I fergot what 8 was for ( to much wine and Jacks with dinner)
9. Angle grinder .. it it wont move, chop it off
10. Spare bolts
11. Make sure that the bolts in 10 are the right size and have locking nuts
12. Thats about it I think ..
Oh
13 .. try to enjoy getting to know your lil that much more intimately

Spelling Nazi's . blow me :D .. I am drunk and dont care ;)

You need to loosen both sides of the diff of and replace both sides together or you will have problems like your having were everything wont line up.If its driveable and your still having problems come down to my place and ill give you a hand to replace all your bolts with new ones and grease it all up i might have all the bolts you need just let me no what size and lenght

thanks a lot for your help guys

I'll loosen the side of the diff I've done off tomorrow and see how I go with the other side, I can see how that would help a lot. Really gunna get stuck into it tomorrow hopefully and get at least more than one spring done!

Also being very careful to keep everything as greased as I can on reassembly... unlike whoever did it last time

your advice is gold, love_mud... especially the beer and mates bit. thanks for the offer duncan but I think I should be right from here on in, even though I think it'll take me a while I'll get there in the end

Rum on I shall!

Got the R/H side rear in today before work in an hour and a half, and that included jacking the car back up and 1/2 dissasembling the L/H side which took me 2 days to get together  Hopefully I'll get the fronts done tomorrow. The difference was loosening everything and letting the diff hang free on a trolley jack - a little good advice goes a long way, cheers guys

Don't forget that steel expands with heat so in some situations , you can heat up around what holds the bolt to free it up, then try undoing it.
Thats if you have an oxy, rattle guns make suspension work quicker as well,
but when you don't have these tools, insist on getting them :D
