While fitting the new tub to my brothers 98 sc ifs hilux today i noticed the rear diff had an lsd oil only sticker on it. Does this mean it's definitely an lsd?
We were both suprised as it doesn't seem to work as an lsd. Could it just be it needs the oil replaced to get it working or will it need to go to a dif specialist?

if its a original sticker chances are that it is a lsd, to check lift the rears of the ground and turn a wheel if both turn Presto lsd .

If you want it to work better, get some lsd oil 85/140 grade...that helps them a bit.
They are fairly loose to allow good manners on road, the other end of lsd's is the Nissan ones that leave black marks on drives and are tail happy on gravel....I like their approach

i'll second that. i've been told from several people that tojo LSD's are only good for about 10,000klms after which they lose their limited slipping ability.

read the axle code on the firewall build plate - if it ends in a 3 or a 5 then it is a LSD.
as others have suggested, the toyota LSD's are pretty ordinary. you can have it rebuilt with new clutches etc but the overhaul cost is prohibitive - it is more cost effective to fit a locking diff.
as a temporary measure it is possible to open the LSD carrier and add shims to the preload spring, which will work for about another 5000km or so.
cheers

Yep, thats why every yota has an option for a difflock...when under load, they do work a little bit, but lift a wheel and its all over...even if its new and never turned a corner

yotas have a LLSD. Limited Limited Slip Diff. All in all actually mine is pretty good for a yota. Has done 65000 being pushed by the v8 and still kinda works. Lockrite next weekend but.....
