Stock GQ Thermo Fan is crook???

HI all,
Stcok thermo fan is not working at all, even with air con on, and even with it on and engine working very hard. Is there anything generally with these that go wrong? Has done 450,000k's, I remember the thermo used to come on lots when towing when engine was a bit younger!
Anyone had to fix one?
