Hi Guys thinking of running twin snorkels on my rig. I need 1 anyway and with a engine conversion due soon i am thinking of geting a matching set made up. Prolly just pipe (metal of some sort) and elbows etc.
Appreciate any ideas, contacts or people who done this before to drop some hints or if you have a matching set for sale for a 94 lux let me know
thanks

Check with airtek and safari cause I know that airtek make both a left and right prado snorkel. Not sure about the hilux though. You may find one that is almost a match

I think with the hilux, Airtek (sp?) the diesel snorkel was on the passenger side and the petrol had the snorkel on the drivers side.

go to an exhaust joint. both snorkels will cost less than 1 airtek.

Diesel and petrol hiluxes are passengers and drivers sides respectively.

Cost
is the issue here - i think this may be the best option. Is it advisable to run either solid or flexible rubber bends or get as many bends as possible bent up by the exhaust place in the single piece?
Also can i run the flexy hose from where the pipe enters the gaurd to the air box? Again leaving my options open for engine conversion.

I think you just hit the nail on the head, that is how I will be doing it...

Mine just sits inside the guard than flexy pipe it to the filterbox.

If you can avoid long runs of Flexi hose do so.
When Gas was a big thing over here in the 80's we were shown how each of the ribs created a whirlpool type eddy which increased in size as the air speed increased, reducing the inside area for free flowing air.
If you are doing long runs of pipe you need to go up in size from the filter intake pipe to overcome the added friction of the longer pipe runs.
I think 2,3inch snorkles, out of exh tubing, then anodised to prevent rust inside and out would be the go.

Where the exhaust tube won't go (and you're better off with mandrel bends welded to gtehr to reduce tube shrinkage and turbulence) try looking at truck supplies/wreckers for rubber tube to put in place of flexy tube.
As JTop said, that convoluted tube messes with airflow big time.

I thought only aluminium (aluminum) could be anodized? What do they do, coat the steel in ally and then anodize that?

Steel exhaust pie is already aluminised (coated in a thin layer of aluminium).

My opinion is that you only need a flex joint between those thing that move and those that don't. So one flex joint between the ening and the snorkle. As for turbulence...... pressed brends won't do it but the ribbed part will. The real question is will the boundry layer that is created reduce the effective size of the pipe to something that is less than required. In most case I would say no but it depends on the application.
For the spelling nazi's I am pissed because I don't have to work tomorrow to there

I will be using flexy joints on the snorkel it self. From the snorkel to the air box will be straight rubber hose(same material as flexy joints) all 3inch so you have minimal flow distirbance.

Make out of of 75mm PVC Irrigation pipe... cheaper that an exhaust shop....
Use irrigation pipe because it has a thicker/flexier wall compared to stormwater or sewer pipe..

PVC pipe ???

MMMMMMMMMMM
Ok for getting the job done, baaaddddd for looks.
Go for ally tube and get em polished
Looks professional and ppl will be impressed rather then think you done the rough as guts backyard job.

Hey Mudpig - In East Brisbane, but get around a bit.. reasonable travel is not a huge issue

Industrial hose and rubber suppliers. You can get reinforced hose that does not compress as it bends. Tell the people behind the counter what you want it for, They'll steer you in the right direction!
Down here in Tassy we have a hose and rubber place called "Purple Pig". Not sure if they are national or not.
Cheers,
Dean
