depends on how you drive it really, some will say 12/100 others more realistic 15/100ish

there are some on patrol4wd forum that say they get 12/100 out of 4.8 petrol GU's..

I just fitted 4.6 ratios to my GU TD6 and running 35's and i have to admit it i'am getting better fuel econmy am doing another test but i reckon it improved another 7-10% and i was driving it harder than normal and air con on high as well...

will wait and see...

also if your thinking because of the ratio changes that i stuffed because of the different tyre size and kms would be out. i did take this into consideration and am surprised about economy.

i believe the 3L does use less fuel however it is a new motor the 4.2 has been around since 88 or so it has been revined however its not new technology.

Either way as bogged said if you worked out fuel v's parts for a 3L compared to that of a 4.2 i'm sure the 4.2 would work to be more economical

The TD6 is fairly good if you don't push it......then you chew the juice

Morkz. Did you go genuine 4.6 or aftermarket, i was keen to do the same but at the time i was told that nissan didnot make a 4.6 rear for the 4.5 petrol which has the large diff , so i went for Rockhoppers instead which dosenot help in high range on 35s.

Cheers Grant

I went genuine because i picked up some out of a 2.8 Turbo Diesel GU which i believe all had the smaller rear diff.

I didnt realize that the 4.5 had the larger rear diff if thats the case u do relize u can pick up some 4.3 ratios real cheap from a GQ or Gu leaf sprung ute i saw someone trying to sell disc to disco for about $700 for the lot.

but i'am much happy now how it drive's.

the 3.9 were ok with my mods but i hated it when i changed gears i had to rev it out a bit more and now i dont.

cheers

I own both a 3.0 t/d manual wagon and a 4.2 t/d ute. Wagon consistently returns 12.5 l/100km with 285 /75s and the ute 15 to 16 l/100km with standard 265/75s. Auto 3.0 t/ds are evne better. Performance wise the 3.0 would leave the "old boat anchor for dead". Reliability wise I recently replaced a 2000 series II GU 3.0 t/d which had 224,000 kms on it. Beyond this sort of mileage I can't comment. Never laid a spanner on it and it still wasn't using oil. Keep the $10K and buy the 3.0. Rego costs are also lower. Nissan bring on a 3.0 ute, adjust pricing accordingly and watch the sales skyrocket.
