On track axle removal!

Dear Forumers

It seems that probably one of THE MOST common failures with the old 10 spliner axles while 4Bing in the bush is the axle/uni/C&P failure. Can someone post up on the forum a quick step by step guide for both front and rear diffs on how to assess, recover, and if possible get the car home under its own steam.
For the rear, I presume its a matter of remove axle, add axle cover/stubb (already in vehicle) to eliminate oil leakage from diff, undo and remove rear tail shaft, apply central diff lock and drive home....

But the front with either a broken uni or axle seems like a more complex situation.

Can someone post a guide for all us as yet not upgraded MAXI's....I hope I never need to use it but with 33's and 5ltr's of fire breathing animal under the bonnet, I can almost hear the axles breaking from here!!! Maxi in rear but teh fronts gonna spit one soon.............

If you have a maxidrive rear diff lock, you cannot simply pull the axles. There is a collar on one that prevents you get the axle out past the stub axle, you have to remove the whole stub axle to get the axle out.

If you break a front inner or outer axle, you do exactly what you described for the back to the front. However, you only have to remove the outer axle and not the inner. If you break a CV you have to pull the old CV out before proceeding as the broken bits can lock up your steering as you are driving.

Take a good magnet on a 3 foot stick and you can change the rear axle complete without taking a wheel off, when they break the spline bit will be stuck in the diff, use the magnet to fish it out. I did it the hard way and had to drop the diff out to retrieve it, we parked uphill steep so we didn't lose much oil. Just keep a spare pair of axles and you can keep playing or drive home no problems.

Every axle I have broken had to be knocked out as it was wedged in tightly. So a magnet won't work for most breakages.

Haven't had that problem on the 3 I broke, certainly worth a go before dropping the diff out.
