Hey i need a diagnosis on the lux. Ok this is the story at 2700rpm - 2900rpm I get a loud rattle sound. It does it in neutral with the clutch in so it's not gearbox also in 2wd and 4wd. My guess is its piston slap.. not good. What do you guys all think?? Is it fixable?? the noise goes away at higher revs. Its an 89 single cab turbo 2.8 engine with 250kms if this helps. Look forward to your help.

ok don't know if this may help, i had well sounds similar, and i thought that i was developing a bottom end rattle, but what it was, was the clutch slave was fucked, and it was not fully depressing the yoke lever????? and was only rattle at high revs! don't no if this helps

i thought it may have been the thrust bearing

you need to get around the motor & have a listen when its doing it to find out where its coming from you can use a screw driver up to your ear (the handle end) or invest in a Stethoscope

it only ever does it at around 2700-2900rpms and makes no difference if the clutch is in or out?? Im pretty sure it might be engine trouble. It still drives fine but if it is engine rattle what will eventually happen and should I fix it or just wait until it actually causes problems. I don't want to have to get an entire new engine because I didn't fix something that could of only cost $200 bucks or so. The problem is i've asked a few different mechanics and they all tell me different diagnostics.

Hi
Just a suggestion, I have seen this on a couple of other makes of vehicles.

If there is a tin plate bolted onto the exhaust manifold ( a sort of heat shield ) sometimes they get cracks around the bolts holding them on. They can also create some silly noises in a motor at revs.

I dont say it is the problem but its worth checking out.

Cheers

Check all you Exhaust mounts, the exhaust could be swinging in the breze and knocking against something. Once again a silly thought but sometimes thats all it is!

well the thing that gets me is it only ever makes the noise at the exact revs every time and I can hold it on 2800 and it will continue to make the noise weird.. exhaust I just had done so don't think it'll be that.

Just on the offchance - is this rig fitted with a snorkel ?? If so check the usual sources of 2.8L snorkel noise, including the non-collapse spring ( if fitted )

Coming in at set revs it is a viabration caused by harminics
You need to set the revs and then climb over in and around listening

so what you guys think i know its hard to tell without listening to the noise yourself but would you say its an indication of a major problem or nothing to worry about??

Without seeing or hearing the noise it is imposable to give a honnest opinion
But saying that and with out seeing it I will say it is going to blow up and you had better sell it to me for a bottle of bundy
