GU big torque engine conversion

Hi guys,

I have a customer looking for a rig to tow his new 27ft caravan. Which is obviously bloody big and weighs close to 3 tonne.

He was looking at a F250 etc etc, but after owning a qg with 350 chev for ages he luvs the nissan and would like to stay with one.

Was wondering what ideas you guys had for a huge torque, very reliable engine that would fit in the GU engine bay.

My initial ideas where, 502 crate motor(fuel economy isnt of primary concern, but geez it would guzzle hard), or 6.2 v8 turbo diesel etc etc.

Considering how much cheaper this vehicle will be as apposed to the 90 odd grand for the f250, dont be shy about mentioning engines that would cost a bit.

cheers.

for reliability and extreme tourque why not go a the chev 6.5 diesel turbo it intercooler and tune it up real well.

Something like that would be ideal.

petrol v8 are good on gas but still that diesel will drive all day long with no problems what so ever.

:D :D :D :D :D :D 7.3 power stroke. Much better than chev V8. That Engine will give you huge torque. And there is so many power upgrades you can do to the engine. The engine is fully electronic unlike the chev. So just changing the chip will give you big power gains. A chip and a 4" exhaust will give a F250 an extra 200hp at the wheels.Im guesing the engine's aren't cheap but it will have the torque your looking for. :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

Then if fuel is no concern,go the 502 fuel injected with twin turbos.

or how about trying one of the turbo 7.3 Ford Powerstroke donks.. you would be on a first there, and I think that woudl be S H I T HOT!
others as you say 6.5 Turbo Diesel Chev....

What about a 5.9L Cummins inline 6 common rail diesel from a current model Dodge Ram? They pump out about 235kW and 800Nm of torque from almost no revs at all and redline is similar to a TD42 so your gear ratios should be OK. Weight and size are not too different from a TD42 as well. A local wrecker seems to think that he can get brand new engine out of a factory reject Ram for about $10000 landed in Aus. He tells me that they get vehicles off the line that the paint is rooted or whetever and they go straight to be parted out.

The I6 is going to be an easier fit than any V8.

Richard.

Ive got a mate with a similar predicament, van weighs a bit over 3 ton loaded, he had a jeep grande cherokee 2.7crd (merc engine), it towed it not too bad, but he needed a bit more, ended up getting a new 100 series td, about 150 kw, it tows it ok (they let him test drive it with the van on the back!!)
He wasn't too interested in big mods as it would void his warranty and reduce engine/driveline durability, but if I was in that predicament i'd have a gu td42, aftermarket turbo, intercooler, exhaust, etc, should be able to get more power than the lc 100 easy enough, and that can tow it pretty well.
If money is no object though a powerstroke or cummins would be nice..

The 7.3lt powerstroke or the cummins would be cool. Somthing different, as theres lots of V8chevs out there.
Marks4wd have 7.3 in a 80series.

And wouldnt take much to make either of them go hard (relative to what would already have been spent).

Stick and with the stock GU 4.2TD and put the money into "good fast" kit to tune the engine up.

A couple of grand on a new IC, high flowed turbo and zorst and he'll be pullin somethin and it won't be the van!!!

i think go the f250......about 65 grand s/h low kms.....what ppl forget is its not just the power u need but also if the van weighs about 3ton the nissan will weigh about 2ton. making it a very uneasy ride/swaying/braking...etc...i would go the f250 minamal mods to do the job/std engine to start with.....cost is a issue but its a much wiser choice.

and 27ft van? must of cost him big bucks!

Don't forget a GU wagon weighs closer to 2.5ton than 2 ton. Put some kit and a couple of people in it and it's not had to get to the 3ton plus mark.

Put a load distribution hitch on the van and you're sweet.

Don't get me wrong, I like F-truck but the are very $$$. $75k is a lot to spend on a truck before you put any kit into it, and if you're are touring you will needs some extras.

Either truck will do the job, all depends on the $$$. :D

hienuf, yeh that was what he had been thinking, but the other downside of the f250 (other than the cash) is that around town etc it is a pain in the arse.

Lots of good suggestions there guys, thanks alot.
I reckon one of the big diesels will be they go, just gotta ring round to check the prices and conversion parts etc.

cheers

Eagle spares was also the company that thought that they could get a new Dodge Ram Cummins engine. Sounds like they may be the go for any of the big US diesels.

Why not go with nissan 4.8 with twin snails ??????

And lower diff gears that should have plenty GET UP AND GO

If i could have any engine in a GU... the cummins 6bt no doubt. The build quality of the cummins makes the chev and ford internals look like they came out of a 4cyl hyundai excel

A Patrol weighs in at around 2.5 tonne, the best I can get my dual cab down to bare tray & empty is 2.2 tonne.
A turbo TD42 with intercooler set up well kicks arse for towing, though I'd prefer a turbo TB45 for overtaking :-)

Or an Isuzu motor would fit the bill, and heaps of parts in Oz

that is if $ is no object..

but a turbo and IC at retail prices is ~$5-6000... so your more than 1/2 way to an engine conversion....

Here ya go from a quick search of the site.

Most powerful diesel engine in the world

If the Seven Wonders of the World was updated for the 21 st century, the Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine could be a contender.

 I had the 6bt cummins idea a while ago. Going on what people told me and my own measurements the engine is just a bit too long for the bay. I wish it would fit because that engine could pump out 400hp all day long. And could pick up an industrial mechanical injection engine next to nothing. I never new 6bt was common rail injection in the dodge ram.I just thuoght it was 24valve electronic injetion. ;) ;) ;) ;)

 Series 60 is too small

 Should go cummins KTA19

I know you dont want to know this but I know in NSW and probably in Vic as well it is against RTA road laws to Tow more weight than the the car or 4x4 drive that is towing weights. It will put it close to the line and will void your insurance if your over. Also I have heared but not sure if it is true that insurance is void if you are towing more than 1000kg with a manual. As I said I dont know if that is true or not check the fine print.

An izuzu might be an option with parts in mind, but my choice would def be the cummins.....well built engine

My coil ute 4.2TDI with empti tray but me and full tanks 2.6t
