so guys

lets start a thread up on engine conversions, would be good as a whole forum.. but anyway

stuff to add:

-what have you done yourself?
-what have you seen done?
-ideas of what can go in what?

just anything.. sorta like a library full of engine conversion info ;)

Ok I'll play

I have a Corolla 5k 1500 in my 87 Suzuki Sierra with the 5 speed toyota gearbox. Fairly easy conversion, had to change one engine mount, use a electric fan in front of the radiator, and a custom jack shaft between gearbox & transfer case.

Pros: Cheap engine $500 & gearbox $400
More torque than Suzuki 1300
Lower first gear

Cons: Not a Suzuki engine
Older engine
Import engine with unknown history

Other engines I 've seen swapped into Zuks

Vitara 1600
Nissan SR20
Mazda rotaries
4AGZE
22r
350 Chevy
4.3 V6
2.5 Ford
1.9 VW Diesel

About ten years ago,
i had a LWB suzuki sierra, 85/86 model ( i think)
When i bought it, it had a 4age 1.6 corolla motor and gearbox in it.
Looked to be a fairly easy conversion.
A body lift would make a little more room too.

customising is only limited by the depths of ones pockets

Regards

Rob

my sj40 is getting a rover 215 with a dellow bellhousing + toyota g52 + dual cases + 4.7 gears

engine pros:
- cheap alloy v8
- high mounted alternator and distributor
- parts and knowledge plentiful
- carby handles side angles well
- can run quite low rpms before stalling
- could be built to put out lots more power than stock

cons:
- uncommon conversion
- lots of custom work required so costs add up

They actually make a kit robbie, is done by Lightning conversions ,
Tampa bay , florida usa. the problem is they mostly convert them to 2 wheel drive :( they sell some good stuff though ,example : Leather trim kits . Huge dollars for any of there stuff .
I read a test on one of there conversions once somwhere it had great
0-60mph , 4.7 seconds  i'm not sure but i think it was an chev LS1, or simaler used in the mix!

Grimbo, Is your conversion engineered. If so what did they say about using an engine older than your Zook?

Engine conversions i have done-Not just 4wds.

Sierra with a Toyota 2T and alloy case 5spd.- Easy almost bolts staight in with no tailshaft mods you couldnt do yourself.

2WD Hilux with 308 and trimatic- Again this almost bolts straight in with no special adapters.

4wd hilux's with 253's and 308's- Using both dellow and marks adapters.

4wd hilux with 4.4 Leyland- not finished yet but has been simple with Dellow bellhousing.

KE70 Corolla with 2T and Alloy case 5spd. Almost bolt in with all available off the shelf Toyota parts.

VL Calais with 200kw injected 5ltr and T5 manual gearbox- This was originaly Turbo 6 and was prob one of the harder conversions i have done as the tunnel is not large enough for the T5. But a BFH fixes that. Other than that it bolts in with all VN crossmembers and tailshaft. Wiring was a bit of a pain but it ran 14.01 on the quarter.

Other than that just basic stuff like 22R into an early Diesel hilux and 5ltr early commodore conversions from 6 and 4cyl.

Conversions mates have done-

4wd Hilux with- 308 and Turbo 350 using a home made transfer case adapter which is quite simple to make.

4wd hilux with- 253 Dyna 5spd and MQ non remote transfer and landcruiser diffs.

4wd Hilux's with- Commo v6s and Cheviy V6s

Early Ford Capri with- 800hp twin turbo windsor

Moose what auto was on the CJ5 ?? The 350 is a common swap but the auto can be done but leaves a very very short drive shaft That is why the only model CJ's that amc put auto in was the CJ7 and CJ8

My brother in-law had a mk3 zephyr with a blown 289 in it, but the best I have seen was 13b turbo in a formula V, this thing blew away porshes, gtrs everthing at winton on a club day.

I used to be in the mazda car club (Had a 13b rx2 club sprint car) so I have seen a rotary put into just about everything.

My 4runner currently has a VQ 5.0lt EFI motor with a dellow bell housing, Toyota w56 gearbox and dual cases.

Did this myself the wiring the first time took a couple of weeks because I shorten and lengthened the wiring harness in 4 places to hide the wiring. I probably solded over 300 wires

The second time I did it with a new harness (when I rebuilt the runner after the rollover) it took 3 hours.

My uncle, who is well over 60 nowadays, built a few oddball cars in his youth, they were all american, they were all painted bright yellow, and they all copped big deisel truck engines. I don't remember ever seeing any of them, but my mum has a few photos of them, all old things like Dodge DeSotos, S-series Valiants, etc... His last one was an Impala with a supercharged deisel in it that got cleaned up by one of the old red rattler trains in melbourne. He now has a pretty tame blown deisel jeep cherokee.
