prob with 18R

Post by Girlie_Luxing »

Hi guys,

I know this may sound like a real stupid question, but i'm having troubles getting the lux to run smoothly,

it has an 18R with a webber 32/36DGV and extractors, new head with hardened seats, rings and big ends done about 2 years ago.

the prob is it keeps missing like it has an air leak somewhere, i've tried the usuals, tightening the manifold bolts, spraying crc around the manifolds and carbi but it doesnt make a difference. i have just changed the plugs, put in vented points and tuned to 8 TDC.

Any thought? it's really starting to s**t me.

Cheers

Missing all the time, under load, when cold, etc.a bit more info would be handy.
I fixed my 18r,pulled it out and threw it on the tip.

Na cause it's not a compression issue. (if thats what u mean) i'll give it a try tho, ta

it does it at idle only, well thats the only time that i notice it.

18r prob

Have you checked all the vacuum lines around the carbie and dizzy advance. I had a celica with the same probs. One of the vac lines was leaking. Hose perished. Took a while to find but fixed the prob....

i had a mazda 626 that was doing the same thing, the problem was one of the new champion spark plug's i'd put in it was faulty out of the box.

if you put champion plugs in it, swap them out with a real brand

try listening with a mechanics stethoscope around all the vacuum lines around the carb, brake booster etc. if it is a vacuum leak, it could be hidden as a torn diaphragm in the distributor or brake booster so check to make sure they are working properly.

another thing to check is the idle mixture, with little weber DGV's the idle mix wanders atrociously and if it is even slighlty lean (or very rich) the engine will stumble at idle.

also as the others have suggested, check your entire ignition system. high tension leads shoud have a resistance of less than 20k Ohms, use NGK or Denso plugs (stay right away from champion, bosch are ok in a pinch), and if possible, ditch the points or at least upgrad to a transisor assisted ignition system to reduce the points current down form 10 - 15A to a few mA.

despite what a lot of people say the 18R is a pretty tough little motor, it will never let you down as long as you don't expect rocket ship performance from it.

good luck

Hi

Check your tappet clearence, one or two might be a fraction tight, and riding a bit.

Have seen it before in a 18R

thanks guys,

I have checked the hoses etc from the carbi,

I didnt think about the tappets (not noisy) but will do that on saturday, I know it is common for them to get out of adjustment but since i've had the new head with hardened seats the tappets seem to be better, but will check them to find or illiminate it.

This may sound a bit silly but could it be a fuel filter starting to block up?
i have a 4y which was not idling well but went ok under power, changed the fuel filter and she went like a dream. seems it was ok with lots of fuel flowing thru but starved with only a little.
any way sounds like your going to find the prob eventualy.
keep the shiny side up.
