can anyone confirm for me before i go and damage something

i wish to change the nylon/plastic bush at the base of the gearshift to remove some slop and it would appear that if i remove the circlip on top of the g/box where the gearshift goes in it would come out and then i woould get access to the bush to change it.

is there anything else i might need to know?

Yove got it. Ensure you have a couple of thin zip ties to put back on boot and pour a bit of oil in to lube the top of linkages. Mine looked dry.
Carpet can be split with a stanley knife above and below boot to make removal easier.

thanks for that Bazzle.
the carpets already out to repair floor cracks and replace a broken seat mount and sounds like a good tip with the oil on the linkages.
