Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey all,

Went wheeling a short while ago and suffered from a lack of front wheel drive, a bit of quick inspection by others suggested that my left CV was busted.

I have jacked it up, pulled the hubs off both sides and before trying to get the brake calipers off (they are bleedin tight!) I gave each axle a spin and the propshaft turns for both of them. (gearbox in neutral, transfer 2H)

If a CV was broken, turning the propshaft shouldn't move the axle, should it?

The left hub looks like it's newer than the right, it's nice an clean, grease looks good, the right one is full of crud. Could it be the hubs not locking causing the lack of drive?

Any help would be muchly appreciated, i really want to get this sorted so I can do some mods! (and drive in 4wd again)

broken bits could be jamming and giving a false drive appearance.
but your theory of a jammed up free wheeling hub is more likely to be the answer.
they can stick when full of crud,
dont over grease the mechanism or it will still not work, grease causes suction.
best to clean it up and spray wd 40, dry lube or similar

when the cv goes sometimes you'll hear it clicking as you try to drive it , more so when turning tight , even though it still turns with the prop shaft doesn't mean she's not broken , with no load it won't take much to turn compared to the weight of the car on it trying to drive .

in saying that it could well be your hub , but in saying that youve pulled it down this far you may as well pull out the axle and inspect the cv for a failure or hair line cracks .

in future jack up the offending wheel with the hand brake on , other wheel on the ground in 4wd and spin the wheel by hand with the hub unlocked than lock the hub and try to turn it, it shouldn't turn if hub is fine , and its most likely a cv, if its a cv you might be able to turn it but might find it hard if not impossible to turn , if its broken to the point of it turning easy, it should at least be making noise when turning by hand ,

Hey we had a problem much simmalar to this in my mates zook.. turned out to be one hub not engauging coz of a fucked spring... check your springs in your engaugers
