I think he is referering to the ultra cheap no name winchs that are plauging ebay at the moment.

8-9-10 k winches for 5 hundred, saw a 9 go for 850 the other day I think. They lookk good at the beginning of the auction, then on the last day go up to where you wouldn't bother.

I reckon if you can get a no namer for 500 bucks and only want it for light ocassional use go for it. But what they seem to be going for I would rather have a reputable one. Not that I have ever used a winch, saw one on the front of a car the other day

would you risk your truck and possibly your life on a "cheap" winch?

That is why I hinted at light and ocassional recoveries, on a softroader stuck on stuff that isn't too difficult or remote, yeah the cheapy, If you have a reasonable 4by which when you get stuck you get really stuck, an dyou like going places that take a couple of hours to get too once you hit the dirt then NO.

Horses for courses. I would buy the more reputable one, because I know if I am stuck I am STUCK. :D
