Outer Limits 4x4 Board

who on here has made their own bead locks? I am looking at making my own any info would be much appreciated!

Closest I've heard of anyone making thier own is getting someone to cut and weld the rims and outer ring and drilling/ bolting themselves. You need to be a bloody good welder cause a bit too much weld will shake the wheel too much and not enough will break the rim on a hard knock.

Yeh ive made 4 sets so far half way through number 5 now .I cut out the rings with a cicle cutter on a oxy then weld all the rings together drill your bolt holes then bolt them together put them in a lathe machine the outside then inside diameters then set them up central on your rims tack weld in 4 spots then go to town with the welder all done very easy .

I wish it was as easy as you make it sound, but then i can't weld ... yet.

you can get the rings lazer cut quite easily. This (if you can draw on CAD) would probably be cheaper than buying the steel and drill bits to do them yourself.

I think that Cheezy may even sell the rings.

Or you can buy 6 stud beadlock rims from Canterbury wheel and tyre for under $300 per rim with a rolled edge lock ring and a ton of locking bolts, cant remember how many exactly.

whats wrong with that, the speedway guys and drag racers have done this for years. You can by rims and the proper screws to use form many speed shops. Works a treat but is a bit of a pain to repair a puncture. Also seen guys use an adhesive to seal their beads with

yeh sicaflex to seal the beads on ... i don't use bead locks im a tight ass

yeh so its a designed system ... no booty fab there .... note they don't pierce all the way through the tyre

this doods got like 30mm screws going through his rim through the sidewall on his 4wd tyres

i highly doubt it .. it would have torn the center out of the tyre first run i reckon

if cheezy does sell the rings anybody got and info? like the price and any photo's, might be the way to go if all i have to do is weld them on.

Didnt Laurie(??) with the solid axled dual cab Hilux from the gold coast just screw his tyres to the rims with like 5 screws?? (4Wd monthly feature)

yes i think that he did do that but not certain how lomg they would last, because they are designed for drag racers i think and they don't go round corners over rocks or anything like last

drag racers manage to spin the tyres on the rims. i have seen a couple of rigs in the US using the screws and they worked fine. The screw doesn't go into the sidewall only through the bead of the tyre so no air escapes.

Know someone that used the screws on 38 boggers. They seemed to work OK as a cheap alternative. He has since gone to secondair beadlocks.

For real cheap beadlocks just put a heavy duty tube in, then air down as low as you want.

was loocking at the second air ones but if you bend the rim the air escapes. Could put a strengthing ring on the rim but if i go to that trouble i moswell put external beadlox on.

I will try and get some pics of my rims fitted with Second Air beadlocks. Trust me they dont leak even when the rim is bent. You wouldnt beleive it unless you looked at the condition of my rims. I have never had a bead loose air at any time. I run 4psi in the Rear and 6psi in the Front. I run the second airs at 45psi.

Ruff thay would be great. It would be good to hear some good feed back about second airs.
so i take it thay you have never had any problems with them.

The beadlocks dont leak as they have a tube inside of the nylon case.
The case simply "shapes" the innertube to place more pressure on the bead.
What does happen is the tube can deform around standard valve, this eventually leads to all sorts of balance issues.
Also the set I had for my 16x10's never really did the job, sure they would work fine while at low low pressures but the tyre still pulls away from the bead and allows dirt mud and crud in there. Once this happens they wont hold air at road pressure.

In the end I gave them away!

Sorry it wasn't positive, some people swear by them, the units for 8" rims may work better? I personally wouldn't touch them again.

Ok i originaly bought these because they were going on my Hilux with the 38/12.5tsl's and it was going to be doing a bit of road work so wanted it less noticable when moving. Bolt on Beadlocks stand out wether moving or stopped. They drove ok on road even though they were never ballanced. My first impresions of them were they suck to install. Most places that have instaled one set wont install another set. Worst thing is that you realy dont ever know if they are installed correctly. Its only a guess. Now i have had them set up for a little over a year and they have prob been put through harder terrain than any other set ever have and they have caused me no trouble at all. The rims do cop a flogging though.

Would i buy them again. Prob not they were just a total pain to install. So much so that i have been running one of my tyres with 2 tubless tyre repair plugs hanging out of the sidewall after spiking a hole in it and i realy cant be bothered re doing the Beadlock. I also have a brand new spare and second Air that i have never installed on the rim because of the work involved.
