whats up with shackle reversals

just found this on Pirate, seen others too, but cant remember where

what is the big deal with having a reverse shackle set up

now i drive a hilux, and everyone sees it as a blessing

but i cant think of one good reason why

it F#$Ks your gaurds
your driveshafts keeps slipping out
and the further it droops the worse your pinion angle is

i could be barking up the wrong tree, but im thinking about converting the shackle back to the front, every other manufacturer in the world must be onto something i think

With the shackle at the front of the axle, in order for the suspension to compress, the shackle ( and therefore the axle ) must move forward. This causes more stress when trying to climb up or over an obstacle.

With the shacle at the rear of the spring, the suspension moves back in an arc away from the obstacle, making it smoother.

so is it only on compression that it comes into play???

That would be when it's most noticable, you raise a good point though, on droop, if you had lengthened shackles and a lots of down travel you could drop your front shaft at the slip joint.

Someone with more leaf spring knowlege care to comment?

mate thats rite what u said ,with a lot off droup u need a costom front shaft witch has a reversed slip joint so the male end is on the diff end and the female is in the shaft ,a hilux one works well in a cruiser . shackle angle is and where it's put has a lot to do with it as well .the pic show'n above has the top mount on the base off the chassie its better to go through the chassie ,the springs come in to play as well .

also shackle reversal plays a great part when climbing obsticles as you dont have your shackles hitting first, thus forcing them back again the chassis and leaving the shackles inverted, makes it horrible to drive onroad,

alright so when setting up a front suspension set-up, predominatel;y for rockcrawling stuff only, im toyin with 2" dropped hangers and EXT shackles, with REALLY flat soft springs, plus im using rears up front with X-over steering, and front diff will be forward approx 3"

plus im also aiming for 37" tyres so in combination to moving diff forward, hitting the shackles should be almost non existant

now too my mind, with the diff that far forward, and shackle at back i will be limiting my travel, where by having shackle at front i'd be increasing my travel, because for obvious reasons there will be more travel at shackle end of spring

am i right or way wrong here??
