Have searched around, but cannot find a clear schematic showing the hookup of a relay with spotties. Have done it before but forgotten what goes where?!!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Problem with that diagram above is you can get relays with different 87 contacts. Some have one 87 which is the output while others have two which are both the output. While others have 87 as an output when you switch it on and 87a which actually turns something off when you switch on the relay.

That was basically a very fumbled way of explaining normally open and normally closed contacts.

Most relays also have their specific diagram on the case of the relay. Also some relays pins are in a different configuration however I think the numbers are always the same.

Hi Utemad there are some sites that list the pin outs for automotive relays and what they do. If I can find one of these sites again or if someone else knows them, will post the address here.

As for the relays, if you are after a relay for a specific job then just ask for the type you want and the pins above will match up to what you want, EG. A horn relay has one pin marked 87.

A headlight relay has two pins marked 87 and are joined together.
The other relay you were talking about with the additional pin marked 87a is known as a changeover relay but is also commonly known in the automotive trade as an Airconditioner relay.

Hope this is of some help, cheers.
