Hi all
I am attempting to replace a stuffed front diff seal on a 1986 Rangie, but am unable to undo the flange nut. Is it standard thread or left hand?
I am swinging off it with a 400mm breaker bar with a 1/2 metre of water pipe extension and it won't budge...but I don't have a hoist so the car is flat on the ground...
do I....
1. eat more wheat bix before I try again in the morning; or
2. gently warm the nut with the oxy?
Cheers
Andrew

It turns the normal way. You need to make a bar that goes in the bolt holes for the tail shaft to hold the flange steady. Then eat more wheatbix.

I used a rattle gun, if you have one handy.
Dead set brilliant invention.

I used a rattle gun also.....easy. Have you also tried jarring it with a big kick on the end of the bar?

Also have a friend sit in the car with their foot on the brake so the flange does not move at all. Easier than trying to hold it while you're under there.
Seriously though, beg, borrow or steal a compressor and a rattle gun. Sooooo much easier.

You should be able to lock the CDL and it wont go far.

I've seen picture on the net somewhere that shows a good way.
You jack the vehicle up high, then place the braker bar (or whatever) with a long handle braced on the ground. Then lower the vehicle to undo it.
I made up a bracket that bolts to the bottom of the diff and the tailshaft flange. That stops it turning. But it's still hard to undo.
From memory it's 120ft/lb to do up.

www.discoweb.org has an article in the Tech section on rotoflex to unijoint conversion. it shows photo on how to undo rear diff flange. May be you could use that info for front.

When I have done it before I use a 1" drive breaker bar with a piece of pipe so it is dragging the ground. Put the truck in low range and drive slowly.
