Hey Guys, I'm after your expert guesses. I have an '83 Petrol Patrol and when i am compression braking, i.e. down hill offroad, it is smoking like crazy, but no other time.
Anyone who followed me when we went out to Toolangi about a month ago will know what i am talking about :?

Any ideas appreciated

It sounds like you have worn valve stem seals or worn valve guides. When compression braking you cause more vacume through the head ports which will suck the oil through.A cylinder head overhaul will rectifie this problem.
The other cause may be if the car is auto and has a vacume modulator is that the diaphram in the modulator has split and is sucking up the auto oil.

Cool, that's what was suggested to me but i thought i'd get a second opinion. It's a manual so it can't be the second option.

Isn't this a normal characteristic of an exhaust brake?
