cheers any help much app.

well im guessing if they were diffrent ratio's the front and the back wheels would be spinning at diffrent speed example the fronts doing 20km's and the rears doing 25km's

but im no expert so i many be wrong

To estabglish your ratio count the crown wheel thheth then count the pinion teeth then divide the CW number by the Pin number and should give you a ratio lookin figure, if not try the number the other way around........................ i thin the fist is correct.

If the F + R are different ratios then when 4wd is engaged the wheels spinning at different speeds F to R will caus ewind up in the drive line, most probably the gear box/trannie BANG will be the end result. You cannot have different ratios or tyre sizes (height) or this is bound to happen at some stage.

Hope this helps - with regards tothe other Q, i don't know :D

the term 'salisbury diff' relates to the type of diff it is.

there are 2 type 'salisbury' and 'banjo'

in one type the banjo the diff center is removable as one unit.

the other salisbury, the gears all come out seperatly.

so a hilux with solid axles fron and rear will have 2 banjo diffs

the fron of an IFS lux is a salisbury and the rear is a banjo

hope this helps you out

You'll notice if the front and rear are different ratios! when you put it in 4xd the car will have a distinct "not wanting to turn the wheels feel" even on totally flat ground. I know because thats how my MK was when I bought it.....took me a little while to work out what was hapnin ! One sure fire way to tell is jack up 1 side of the vehicle ( front and rear wheel off ground) put it in 4wd, mark the tyres and put a brick or something next to mark, rotate the wheels and see if they both get back to the mark at the same time...good luck

Brad has explained the different diffs well, but just to help these are two rear coil spung 4Runner diffs.

The dirty one :D is a stock Toyota and the diff is removed as a complete unit from the front, ie Banjo.

The painted one is a Dana44 and the diff is removed by removing a cover plate off the rear and the diff is removed separately in parts.

what a piss weak D44 center with lux outers

Just before anyone goes stupid, there is a slight bit of sarcasm in the above statement

No.. a stripped down D44 with the 4runner axle tubes sleaved over the top and a detroit electrac...

I added a foot note to my last post, It is cool but I would not use a D44 centre if I was going a custom axle, especially when you can get D60 rears without to my trouble

sorry to hijack
but is there anyway to tell what ratios you have without removing the diff?
are there any markings?
i am asking this because i tested it today and my fronts spin slower than my rears and the rear is marked as a 4.88(by a wrecker) but it is in an 84 hilux.........as a 4.88 is lower than standard on this and the fronts are still spinning slower than the rears i have no idea of what either of them are. my guess is the rear has been marked wrong
any help appreciated

Hi Shorty
Early L/C diffs have the ring of bolts on the backplate but they still come out the front like a H/Lux does, you need to read a manual to understand why.
Hi Batcho101
If you jack only 1 wheel off the ground and mark the wheel and the driveshaft, then rotatre the wheel 1 full turn whilst counting the pinion turns. Then multiply the pinion turns x2 and you have your ratio.
You can be quite accurate if you are exact with the pinion part turn.

if you are sure you still have the factory diffs fitted, then you can just read the code off the firewall.

the 'roate and count' method is also very accurate if you use, say, 20 wheel rotations then divide the number of pinion turns by 10.

most toyota diff gears and many aftermarket gears also have the ratio and/or tooth count stamped on the side of the crownwheel.

it is an absolute last resort to actually count the teeth.
