hey sorry to make a new thread instead of keeping this in the custom tray thread, but i need this answered asap. just thought id ask what u guys think about the prices i got quoted for the metal for my tray:

Frame - 75mm x 50mm Box Steel (~6m) = $108.85
Supports - 25mm x 50mm Box Steel (~5m) = $62.30
Chassie Rails - 100mm x 50mm Box Steel (~2.6m) = $54.50

Checker plate tray - 2.1mm (2.4m x 1.2m) = $112.00

Total comes to = $337.65 for all materials including checkerplate, this is all from one place, Premier Steel in hobart. Do you guys think this is an ok price, and is this enough / too much materials for a dual cab tray. thanks.

They all sound pretty good prices to me i priced some 75x75 with 3mm wall i think it was and was around $100 about six months ago.

Do you think 2.1mm will be thick enough for the plate i was thinking of replaceing my timber deck and wasnt sure what thickness to use. I rarely carry anything heavy i`ve even thought about getting alloy checker plate and bolting it to my cross braces then running a thin bead of sealant underneath is this a good idea or not

yea thats cool then, mine were for 3mm wall thickness too. my ex-girlfriends dad is a builder so im gonna have a chat to him, see if he can hook me up with a cheaper price. im hoping to get it cheaper cos thats a fair bit when i could always just keep the old tub

btw, 2.1mm checkerplate should be ok according to aza

while you're not getting ripped off, you could get better prices

Do not forget to factor in the weight of the tray. For an off the top of my head calculation you are getting to be over 140kg.

75 * 50 * 3mm wall thickness * 6meters = 33KG

50 * 25 * 2mm wallthickness * 5meters = 10kg

100 8 50 * 3mm wallthickness * 6meters = 50kg

2.4 * 1.2 * 2.1 thickness = 48.5 kg ( you may need more than this)

You may also want to add tie down rails, etc.

thats what i was thinking, but after talkin to aza and other people with custom made trays, thats the thickness of materials that people have been using. and considering that aza's tray was nearly twice as long as mine id assume his would weigh twice as much as well, he says his is ok.........:S

dude i don't know where u got your weights from,

he is building the same tray as me, (sorta) i used a full length's of 100x50x3mm 8m length, $150
75x50x2.5mm 8m length,$96
2400x1200x3mm checker plate, $120
and i can pick mine up and carry it,

i also have 2 lengths off 40nb pipe about 50 od, 8m lengths

and mines still not enough weight over the rear wheels,

Yes Ditch I did get it wrong. As I said it was off the top off my head. I have checked on the weights from a metalcorp book called the steel guide. This book includes mass and bundling data and was published in July 2004.


75 * 50 * 3mm wall thickness * 6meters @ 5.42 kg per meter = 32.52KG

50 * 25 * 2mm wallthickness * 5meters @ 2.15 kg per meter = 10.75kg

100 * 50 * 3mm wallthickness *2.6meters @ 6.6 kg per meter = 17.16kg ( I misread your length at 6meters- I quoted 50kg)

2.4 * 1.2 * 2.1 thickness @ 18.533 kg per square meter = 53.38kg (If you went for 3.0 mm thickness it weighs in at 25.55 per square meter = 73.584 kg)

All up weight is 113.79kg (if i got my sums right)

You may also want to add tie down rails, etc.

i can't see me lifting 113kg's

but anyway,

my deck is only 1.3mm propeller plate..not practical but plenty light.

Steel chequer plate will weigh it down, Custom's would be heaps lighter than mine(not that I've lifted it). His has the alloy on top and mine has steel. I am only a lil bloke but Me and a mate can lift mine easily but it took 3 to take the styleside off. Either way I am lighter than std and still have a lil weight to help the springs work etc. Depends what you want to do with it I guess
