GQ PTO - Pictures Wanted

Hi all,
I am considering putting in a Nissan original PTO from ALLJAP to my 92 GQ TD42. However I understand, apart from being hard to get, is that when fitted they protrude up to 1 foot out the front of the car. Much more than other winches.

Is this correct?
Doesn't that look shit?
A custom bar would be required, who makes them in Brissy?
Has anyone got a picture of their rig (PTO/winch bar) they can send me.

Regards in advance,
John

John,
You can make use of the original winch cradle by modifying the mounting brackets (where they slot into the chassis rails) and lift it about 2.5 inches higher than standard. Any more will cause winch driveshaft to touch under the radiator brace. That will help to improve approach angle.

I have some close-up pics of that winch bar if you want them...they're too large for me to load up, but someone else may be able to do it??

Cheers

Give superior allignments a call. They may be able to modify it so as not to protrude and they can deffinatly sort a bar out for you. I enquiered with them about the same thing early last year.

Mitch and Turps,

Love ya work. Thanks for the piccies.

Turps, r you going to upload your images? Did you raise your winch like Mitch? Do you have a custom bar?

Thanks LudaCris for the lead.

Any other advice appreciated.

Cheers,
John

I have a dodgy custom bar. But I like it.

If the camera is in the car. Can pull bash plate off and get more pics tommorow.
I had mine made with bigger wings and guard protection. Cos at the time it was my daily driver (mind you it is at the moment to - stupid magna). Which since I drive to work thru a popular Kangaroo spot the added protection was a must. Plus I have seen alot of quarter panels bent cos they havnt and protection.

Hi John
Make sure you have a PTO plate to remove on the side of your G/Box as on later patrols Nissan stopped cutting the hole although you can take the G/B out and cut the hole and drill and tap the mounting holes as the drive gear is still in the G/B.
The winch is not a strong item, they take teeth off the PTO, wind the worm out through the front of the winch, and screw the main axle through the drum, IF YOU DON'T USE THE CORRECT SHEAR PIN, which is a 8mm roll pin with a pair of grooves cut 1/2 way through on the shear points.
These pins fail easily so get yourself a snatch block and a hand full of spare pins

J Top raises a very good point, but I'm not sure what the solution is to plucking teeth off the PTO output unfortunately?? Any ideas J Top??

Take the end cover off (passenger side I think) the winch head and rotate it 180 degrees so the oil filler hole is higher and you can increase the oil capacity. Use good quality synthetic oil in it.

The Nissan unit has two shear pins on the driveshaft, we only break the one closest to the g-box...typical because its the hardest one to access when stuck in the mud

The oil in the PTO is actually supposedly a 600 weight, it can't be a hypoid oil because of the bronze in the winch. You can get this oil from Steam -Train enthusiasts.
I believe the pin at the G/B end is just a drive pin as there is no point in running 2 shear pins in the same shaft.
It has been suggested that you can get adjustable clutch's for industrial drives, fitting one of those set to a safe limit which ratcheted when the torque limit was reached so you knew to hook up a snatch block. The winch would still self brake so there would be no safety problem and you would not have to change a shear pin.

I have the PTO drive plate so it's just a matter of getting lucky with ALLJAP, here's hoping

Mitch and Turps, If you have close up photo's (drive shafts, winch mount etc) that would be great. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. If not that is ok, you guys have been more than helpful. I am interested particularly in the raised by 2.5" comment of Mitch and seeing the drive shaft angles.

Won't be able to help you out on that one for a week or so John. The winch is off and the gears are away getting replacements built for it. Supposed to have a spare one turning up on Monday though, so if we get motivated we may get that one mounted and be able to take some more pics for you. We're doing recovery at the Superwinch comp next weekend so need it running for that.

The truck has a 2" body lift on it, so we modified the arms that slot into the chassis rails to lift it approx 3", so there is a minimum of clearance between the radiator brace and the driveshaft. The brackets which mount the driveshafts to the chassis have only been slightly modified, and that was only to avoid the oil return hose from the turbo which was in the way. Driveshaft angles don't appear to be excessive.

Hey John,

I had a chat to AllJap and they are getting back to me with availability to get 3 winches into the country. They reckon time frame would be around 10-12 weeks though so your early April timeframe may not be achievable.

I will PM you when they tell me more.

Richard.

AllJap was talking $650 for everything to do with the winch. I am sure if a few more people wanted these wonderful pieces of gear then we could get the price down a little.

I actually had dibs on a PTO that was coming in on a Safari front cut and arrived last week. Unfortunately some bugger removed it from the front cut so that they could close the doors on the container that it was in. This means that I am back to square one!

Anyway, is anyone else interested if more units can be found? First in best dressed of course. If anyone else wants them in Melbourne area we could also reduce the shipping significantly by putting them all on the same pallet.

I am going to call my contact there again today to see what he has found out about getting multiples.

Richard.

BTW, does anyone have any idea how much the full PTO winch assembly with gearbox and so on actually weighs?

My spare one turns up on Monday. Is the complete unit including spare cradle and all. Will throw it over the scales and let you know what it weighs.

Also, $650 for the complete unit is a pretty good price. They are the same price here, and every 2nd truck seems to have one!

Thanks for the offer to measure the weight. It will be greatly appreciated.

Are they fairly common in the wrecker yards over there in Kiwiland? Maybe it would be easier to import them from there instead? I think that the reason why they are so common over there is that a lot of them would be Safaris imported second hand from Japan. I have noticed that virtually every one of the Safaris that we get over here have a PTO winch as well. I wonder what they cost as an option when new? I priced one up new through Nissan and they quoted me over $12000 just for the winch itself. To get everything would have come to almost $20000 which is significantly more than a good condition Safari with PTO :-)

Hi guys,

I also have a problem with my PTO winch. Because of a stupid accident, I broke the winch case (left side, not the one with the gears, the one with the free spool item).
Now, I need to buy that part of the case, or the case entirely.

Who can help me, please?!?

I need your help, because otherwise I can't find a solution. Here, the Nissan representative has no ideea about the fact that a PTO winch is available for a GQ....

many thanks,

Gabriel

Ask on a bunch of the forums and it may well be that someone will have destroyed their winch on the other side and could sell+send you thei casting you need. Otherwise, have you looked into fixing the casting? This is not as hard as you might think.

Hi Guys
I have been flooded with replies for the winch, which I don't own but know who has it for sale.
LEGS X1 has first dibs followed by

Also, Grabriel, some of the MK/MQ Safaris came out with the same style winch but about 100mm wider in the drum, so you could also get the end from 1 of those as over here MKs are considered to be a big old whale like a 60 series and are not popular.
