LPG on TB42E

I thought this might be a bit more appropriate here ;)

How hard is it to install ?

How much should it cost to install, tune and compliance ?

It is going to be straight gas. What sort of power and economy should I expect ?

Any other tips or advice ?

Cheers

Probably wouldn't cost that much to get someone to professionally install it & give you a gas ticket, worth trying anyway. At least you know its all done sweet and you'll have to get them to check it and tune it anyway, the money you save is probably not that much. I think most of the "cost" of a professional install is just the parts.

On straight gas, with the timing advanced a bit more (you can actually advance it higher then you can with petrol as gas burns slower (apparantly)), you will lose a tiny bit of power. A lot less power lost then if you run it on dual fuel anyway.

You probably won't even notice the difference, but in dad's 60 series on gas it does run out of a bit of puff going up hills, where as on petrol it powers up there. I suggested that he fill it up with premium next time, bump the ignition timing up a bit more (as premium is higher octane), and then see how it goes when your running it on gas.

Because gas burns slower, you can advance the timing a bit more - it will probably still be slower then outright petrol, but for what gas is costing me at the moment, it's still rediculously cheap to run (36 cents/litre last time I filled up).

FARK

LPG down here is 53 - 57c per litre :bad-words:

It's directly related to the cost of petrol, its usually around 50% of the cost of unleaded, I'm assuming your petrol prices are higher then up here at the moment ?

DANG !

are they wagga prices dan ?

i paid 36c this morning in sydney

expect to loose power with gas as well.

im fitting extractors and a 2.5 zorst to try and claw some of the torque i did have, back

you could also try fitting one of those brass button rotors which they recommend for lpg

Brass button rotors you say? I havn't heard of that before.

I fitted extractors/2 1/4" exhaust and noticed pretty much fuck all difference - I'd say your money if your current manifold/exhaust is in good nick.

foad,

is that an L28 or a tb42 motor your running in your mq ?

L28 - see sig :)

Yep they are Wagga prices (ULP is 106.9 all day, every day  )

Rhys,

Yours is dual fuel, so its a bit of a compromise tuning. Mine will be straight gas, so I imagine any losses will be minimal (I hope ;) )

Brass button hey ? Mmmmm might have to check that one out.

I googled about the rotor for LP, couldn't find anything.

Anyone got any more info on it? I might ring that gas research place and see what they have to say about it.

I really can't see why a different rotor matirial would very better for gas?!

Also, "brass button" sounds like they are talking about a heavier clutch, makes me sceptical that someone just hasn't got their terms mixed up :)

The "brass button" being talked about is actually an extended rotor button in the distributor for carby 4.2 Patrols/Mavericks. It is a useful addition for those on LPG in helping to prevent backfires.
It isn't applicable on the L28 motors.

Andrew,

Mine being an EFI GQ, I shouldn't need one ?

the extended rotor button is a bit of a scam. all you have to do is bend the existing one up a few mm. it does make a big difference.

dan, i can't speak from expereince on the engine hookup side of yours, as i have only done a non EFI TB42, but the rest of the install is a piece of piss.
there is a ctually more work in stripping all the old shit out than what there is in installing the LPG gear.

If you are gong straight gas, and tune it to suit, you should actually make MORE power than you did with petrol. LPG is a superior fuel compared with standard unleaded. it has an octane rating similar to optimax or synergy 8000. both my GQ's go harder on LPG than petrol.

Also, LPG is no longer priced accordingly with petol. there used to be a law saying that it couldn't exceed 50% of petrol price, but not any more.

CRUSHU,

Thats what I had heard in relation to the tuning

BTW, the prices down here are a rort :x Apparently, the ACCC are investigating the Fuel Industry in Wagga. Even 1 hour down the road in Albury the price is at least 10 cents per litre less :?

Wendle,

Will I get the same benefit from modifying the rotor button on an EFI ?

I think I may leave the install to the experts  I'd hate to get it wrong with LPG ;)

.

Do you need to have an original nissan dizzy cap for this to work (bending the rotor up)???

Im asking because I use to have misfiring issues big time! And I tried that bending the rotor up trick which did nothing to stop the misfiring.

I since then fitted a modified extended rotor button and not had a single misfire.

Well, I found a local guy who will install it, tune it and compliance it all for $500

Its going to cost $150 to have the tank re-complianced  Guy said it had about 4 years left when I bought it - turns out it had 2 months left  Oh well, at least it will be good for another 10 years

So the GQ will be all GASSED up for the Sydney trip this weekend to pick up the buggy

Shorty I pay about 37c for gas in western sydney. The price is higher for you because of transport and also State Government Tax. When I went out bush a bit it when up to the 50c or a bit more mark.

I think it is, as the end of 2006 LPG is going to be taxed the same as petrol, so its going to cost the same soon. Dont quote me on it thats what i heard off my local mechanic down the coast. And he stopped fitting LPG systems because it doesnt make the same money as b4.

I have heard the same, but it completely goes against the whole point of using LP gas as a fuel - as it is better for the environment.

Maybe we should organise a letter/complaint to our local members - can't hurt.

I sure as hell could not afford to run my car if LP gas cost the same as normal petrol, and really - Australia manufacturers all it's own LPG reserves. Hell at one stage, they used to burn LP gas off as a by product of petrol - it was just a waste.

There are some politicians against it - so we might have some luck yet!

Well the LPG is all fitted, complianced and tuned

Goes quite well. Very smooth at idle. Does not seem to be any real noticeable loss in power.

Pain in the ass getting some of the bits  But the $$$ saving in the end made it worth while ;) Considering some places wanted near the $3000 mark  Came in well under half that

LPG filler replaced the Unleaded filler

Replacement gas sender makes my old petrol gauge act as my new LPG gauge  Beats looking at some little LED light hidden under the dash ;)

Very impressed with the services of THE GAS MAN at Alexandria, Sydney  Quick work, quality looks good and they kept me informed at all times

Just need to work out my fuel economy now - as I dont want to run out being on straight gas

Not sure :?

I will ring them Monday and see if they did.

If they didn't, how much is a safe amount of advance to run ? Will I have to change anything else ?

Will this have noticeable benefits ?

Cheers
