What model Pajeros are these ?

Have been looking at getting a 4WD for a while now and like the look of these.
Can anyone give me an idea what model they might be so I can try and work out what I might need to pay?

Mitsubishi Pajero NH-NL.swb late 91 t0 approx 99.
1st pic looks like a GL or GLX.
2nd pic is a GLS (top of range)
Shoulod cost anywhere from $6000 to about $13000.
If you haven't had a 4b before,then once you get it you'll be wondering why you didn't do it sooner.

Small correction.
That body shape only went to 96 (I think), it stopped at the model NK.
NL Have a big, boxy square looking gaurds but are other wise nearly identical.
GLS is the middle of the range. Exceed is the top of the range, I think you'll find it pretty rare to find an Exceed in a shorty (not even sure they came in that spec) but you'll find heaps of GLS. The soft tops are grey imports into AUS, they were not a local spec but they a pretty common nonetheless.

The NL has the same shape as above. We have a 99 model. The Box shape came with the GLS and Exceed I think

Yes.
That "shape" in the pictures is also referred to as Generation 2, and the NL with the flared guards is sometimes referred to as Gen 2.5 - particularly by the Americans. The current shape (NM/NP) is what we call Gen 3; Aus never received SWB Gen 3s.

So what could I expect to pay for something like either of the above - is the $6k-$13k realistic ?
The other ride I am looking at is the Vitaras. Basically want something fun I can offroad and work on to learn. The Vitaras might be better for this purpose?

It depends on what you want to do with it. Vitaras are tough and capable vehicles, but they're smaller than the Paj, with less ground clearance. A Paj can be lifted further than a Vitara before you start to run into trouble, and can take 31" tyres standard, 33" tyres without making radical changes or 35" if you start with the 3.5 or 2.8.
A Vitara starts needing minor body sculpting with 29-30" tyres, 31" tyres requires dedication, 33" tyres requires major surgery.

Yeah - My brother has a Vitara and I personally would prefer something bigger, but dont want to go as big as a Maverick. The Pajero has a shape that I really like...
The Vitara though looks like it has a lot more 3rd party addons and looks like it would be an easier car to work on, and also cheaper to throw around - ie have more fun in. If my budget is around $10k including the base vehicle I think Im more likely to get better value out of the Vitara.
I keep looking at the one below and thinking that it looks much more like a "fun" car.

The Paj has a stronger drivetrain as well and more power standard so I reckon the fun factor is higher........................

You're in the Mitsubishi forum, Angus - of course we're gonna say Paj!
If you really want the Vitara, I'm sure the Suzuki forum can talk you into it.
Whichever vehicle you end up with, I have no doubt that you'll have fun.
But I still maintain that you'll need to perform "irreversible" mods to make a Vitara as capable as my Paj - which I can revert to stock if I really need to...

Yep - I understand all that
I *really* like the look of that Paj in the top pic. However I am thinking that I want a real 4wd that I can literally bush bash. One that I wont care if I bounce it off a tree or a rock.
The Vitaras Ive pretty well eliminated as I think they look too small.
The following is a Frontera (I think) that I like the look of from a budget basher perspective.

Also known as the Isuzu MU, I believe. Similar in size to the shorty Paj, I think the running gear shares a lot with the Jackaroo/Rodeo (but don't hold me to that...)
I don't know what's available for them in Oz, but I think there's a reasonable amount of stuff available in the States. 4WD Monthly did an article on body lifting one (3" from memory) and they made it sound harder than lifting a Paj - but it was being done by a shop, so they probably didn't want it to sound easy.

Hi Angus
I looked at both vehicles b4 I bought the J Top and I wasn't impressed with the MU. Weaker front diff, shorter front axles, less artic, poor engine choice/weak 2.8 td or hungry underpowered 2.6 petr
In my books there is no choice between the 2, the Paj wins hands down and thats why I bought 1

Its as much the shape of the vehicle too that I am looking for... Whatever I buy I do plan on using it as a learning exercise so am interested in probably changing engines, suspension, etc with whatever I get so whatever is stock doesnt worry me too much. Id prefer to buy the basics and add my mods as opposed to work around someone elses changes. Im pretty much happy to just buy a chasis - but the more bits that come with it the better.

It's an NJ.
Most NK's were lwb quad cam v6's
