Custom Tray

I'll be building a custom tray shorter, hopefully lower with a bit of roll over protection built in and able to use a hilift jack on. Have an idea about how I want it to look and be constructed but no idea about steel dimensions. Does anybody have a design/drawing of a good tray stating section sizes and wall thicknesses?

i used 3mm wall thickness RHS 4 a bit of weight and strength

I'm looking for lightness as I already cart around enough shait. So you reckon that 3mm is needed for strength. Where did you use this, around the perimeter, the bearers running paralell with the chassis rails or the joists under the floor?

bee bee, i have CAD drawing of my tray!

i used 2.5mm, but it has extra steel than the usual designs for strength, it will be 170KG including roll bar and checkerplat floor.

it has taken a looooooong time to build and it still aint finished

and it is 2000 long by 1750 wide, u could go shorter if u chop the chassis

if any one is interested i have a copy of the one steel catalogue on CD which has all of the major steel peices like RHS and tubes etc on it - all the information - good for designing end caps 8)

but 40x40x3 should be fine for the main supports

on my cross member for my rear shocks i used 40x40x4 - heavy shit

My tray is made of 3mm main rails, 2mm outer edges and 1.6mm supports for the chequer plate (I need more of these but) I have dropped it on its side and a number of times against rocks and trees etc etc and never bent the tray.

i finished mine for my truck not long ago,,it is 2.4m x 2m,,weighs about 230kg's(with side boards, roll bar),it is all made from 3mm thick rhs...the 2 chassis rails are 100mm x 50mm and all the rest is 25mm x 50mm rhs..one way of reducing weight and cost is to use 50mm x 5mm flat bar for the cross runners,,just space them a little closer...

Bubs, I'd love a copy of that cd. Where are you? Email me - beebee@pirate4x4.com

Guts, you say that you need more strength. Did you use aluminium or steel checker plate and what spacings are your joists under the checker plate? How high off the chassis rail does the u/side of the floor have to be with the flex that your getting so as the tyre won't scrub? Any idea of the wieght of your tray?

Alloy chequer plate
NFI, its a bit hard to measure it for you ATM :roll
2 people can lift the weight but you need 4 beacuse of the way it is blanced.
The under neath side of the plate is 190mm up from the mounts and it sometimes JUST touches.

is there a cheaper option than steel checkerplate???

im going to need 2 1.2 x 2.4 sections and at $120 a piece + $30 to have it cut and joined and dropped into my tray, it is fairly expensive, is this an ok price???

Sounds fair MYTLUX. Helluva lot cheaper than doing it in alloy like i did.

Guts, thanks for the reply. Yours still sounds pretty heavy.

Juzza, how much did you alloy one cost?

yep...just use normal smooth sheet...and that price you got,,was it for alloy chequer plate or steel???if it was steel that sounds a bit dear to me...

Thats with my 140lt aux fuel tank in it. It on its own is fucking heavy. Take it out and 2 people can lift it no worries.

I can tell you now if you build one lighter then mine then you really are doing well.

Ruff how simpal is my tray?

Yeah guts has a simple tray to go with a simple owner

Yeah beebee, steel frame, alloy checka for the floor back panel tailight panel etc. Alloy work cost about $500 but its worth the extra. Won't rust, 'tis light, looks good, doesn't mark when you throw stuff on it, and no need for paint, powdercoat etc. Gotta love traybacks, once the cabs past, just drag it along trees etc. :D

I know that alloy does have it benefits but I'm a bit suss on the strength of it for places such as the floor. I don't really like the idea of steel though coz stuff slides around too much and its friggin heavy. If I had either steel or alloy floor, I'd put a mat on it. At the moment I've got timber floor and I really like it. Unfortunately, timber is a little on the heavy side. For this reason, I'd probably go the alloy but I'm unsure of how much subfloor support the alloy needs. For timber I'd work on something like 450mm centers for the joists running one way but for alloy I'm thinking that it will requre more supports or at least supports running perpendicular as it doesn't have a grain like timber that creates strength in one direction.

I don't know - all too hard!

And the tray will be built from pre-galvanised rhs to try and stop it rusting out like the last one.

And I still don't know whether to bob the rear corners like Ruffs. If I keep it square, it'll probably end up looking much like Gutz's as I like many of its' features.
