4.2 Rattle & Hum

Was wondering what that rattle/hum noise is that you hear in every 4.2d when your near the bottom of the rev range in the lower gears, e.g. when you could probally change back a gear but have enough pace up to accelerate up into the rev range.

You would have to have experienced the 4.2 d to know what I am talking about.

Is this the noise that sound like you have a dodgy diff or driveshaft ?
Hope so, so dont have to worry about it anymore

Na, its more like a rattle, doesn't really sound like a tail shaft or diff. Sounds like it comes from the gear box, I don't think its anything to worry about, something common in all 4.2's, in my experienc3e anyway.

You mean like a chatter when you take off from a standing start etc. I've heard something about engine mounts that can fix this, not sure might be mistaken?

i beleieve its more like a vibration with a rattle in it, if so, my rattle comes from my rear disk backing plates, not sure on the rest.

Yeah, mine has a vibe at about 900-1000rpm. I think it is normal?? I don't think mine has worn engine mounts, it has only done 86,000km all on road.

berret, maybe this is it. It's more like a urrrrrrrrrrrrr then the noise and vibration disipates and your away in the rev range.

I have noticed other 4.2 diesels in car parks etc ideling along and you can hear then comming. In fact without looking you know its a 4.2 diesel, doesn't matter what year model, its a 4.2 d. What do you think, mounts or just the noise the big dinasour makes creeping along.

I notice my folks GU TD42T has started to develope the same vibration now it has done a few k's. When I've got the cash I might try some Cheezy mounts, I would think it would be more a case of flex or abroption in the mounts to take the vibration out, whereas the stock ones might be very stiff. Anyway hopefully some else with some experience can tell us something about it????? Anyone....????
From past experience with a truck I used to drive which developed the same sort of rattle it was something like a thrust bearing from memory.

Just a resonance thru drive line. Sometimes from or at idle caused by chatter in pressure plate dampners.
BUT may be lugging noise which means change gear or bearing damage 'may' happen.
Just because it will pull from down real low doesnt meant its meant too all the time.

I think I'll take it to the dealer anyway since its under warranty. I was hoping I would be able to give them a few hints seeming they need them most of the time. (The service manager where I take it does anyway). Thanks guys.

Yeah mine has the same problem although it doesnt have to be revving that low to do it and it doesnt do it at idle. only under load. you can also feel the vibrations coming through the floor. had a quick scan of the engine mounts but they looked good. i might crawl under tomorow with "jim" the jimmy bar and have a prod around.

Mine does it & has done since new. Most vehicles with large heavy duty gearboxes do this when lugged along a gear higher than they are supposed to be at low speeds.
My old mans trucks all used to do it. I dont know why, they just do. You listen to most medium duty trucks as they pull around a corner in say second when they shopuld be in first. Just drivetrain noise I guess.
