Triton modifying : ) and parts

Hi guys,
New to the forum and 4WD ownership but not to 4WDing!

I have recently come to own a 2000 model Triton DC GLX with the 3.0 v6

I am looking at doing a few mods to make it a more 'unique' car as i have done with all my others ; )

Firstly what i have collected
Rear GLS flares
New altezza tail lights
New front bar lights
new indicators
New front grill GLS
New front head lights GLS
A new style side tray

What I am looking for

GLS front flares
GLS front bumper

A panel beater friend is going to two tone the ute as per GLS colours

A few mods i want to do are A. new rims and tyres
and B either a suspension lift or body lift as i wouldnt mind 33's

I have looked in at a few places and a body lift price seems fairly consistant at around 600 bucks
My question is are 50mm steel or ally spacers allowed or do they have to be of a urathane material?
ie for DOT compliance

If any one knows of any one that has a 2000-2004 triton that has fitted a bull bar to there car and wants to get rid of a standard bar PM me I'm starting to get desperate

I can even swap a TJM triton bar for it if required!

TIA
Ryan

Hi Ryan, welcome to OL!

Queensland Transport prefer steel or aluminium blocks - they'll only allow plastic if they're metal sleeved. You're supposed to contact QT before the lift to obtain "approval in principle" and then front up for a QT inspection after the lift. The documentation they provide spells out the requirements pretty well, and I found the procedure to be very straight forward.

Just remember that the QT inpsectors can't overlook any roadworthy issues, so make sure the whole vehicle is good before you go in.

Cheers,

Scott

OK i wasn't sure wether you could use ally/steel as i was getting conflicting information

I was looking at doing everything myself ie i cant justify 300 for a kit when the kit consists of ally/steel billets and a few spec bolts
especially when we have a fitting and turning shop at our disposal!

Whats the go in relation to reasons for raising the body? ie do they ask you for what reason you wisht to raise the body? to which you cant say that you want to fit bigger wheels

truck is stock as a rock except for a TJM front bar so RW is no drama
I'll do the lift first

Is it a blue plate modification or just needs to be sighted that it is no more than a 2 inch lift?

in regards to the bling! hehehe I come from the 4cyl scene so it was a givin! My other cars are small very low to the ground and quick ,n now i am after the opposite especially with so many other 4wd's on the road its just alot safer!

I don't remeber being asked to justify the modification, but I lifted mine so I could install a larger long-range tank. I could only go from 75l to 105l without the lift, got 120l with the lift - owning a shorty does have downsides. :) The larger tyres were a bonus.

If they do ask, tell them you want better approach and departure angles - they can't argue with that.

There's no blue plate - stamp and signature on the "approval in principle" form they send you before the mod.

They don't just look for legality of other mods - general issues like faulty lights/wipers/mirrors, dodgy steering, oil leaks etc are all fair game during the inspection. If your truck is a late model you should be fairly safe; be nice to them and they're less likely to be nasty to you.

Cheers,

Scott

well i cant use the tank excuse! its already got a 140 litre tank!
driving to sydney tommorow to pic up a new styleside for it!
Mrs wasn't to impresed when i said we wern't stopping!!

As far as i can acertain pretty much all i have to do is loosen all bolts and fittings to the chassis remove the bull bar and do one side at a time and cut the radiator fan shroud up to suit? that sound about right?

this approve principle thing is it over the counter or something that you have to ask for?

all modifications i have ever done have been blue plate ones first time i heard of the one you described NJ

Thanks for the help so far!

Have a good crawl around underneath and look for anything bridging body to chassis. Things like brake lines (front and rear), clutch hydraulic lines, wires to gearbox/transfer, handbrake cable etc. Is your rear bumper attached to body or chassis? What about tail lights? Fuel filler, mud flaps? Mine had some silly tabs protruding from the body under the top surface of the rear bumper - that created a few problems until I worked out what was wrong.

Call Queensland Transport and ask for help on the process. The lady I spoke to faxed an application form to me - too easy. :D

Cheers,

Scott

Don't cut the fan shroud, lower the radiator so you still get 100% from the fan

Bull bar fitters throw out a lot of plastic bumpers so may pay to call a few of them.

Tried quite a few places TJM @ moss st was quite helpful in getting me all the parts i need and i guess they will get my business for all the accessories that i am going to fit as well

I went to a few dealers to find out wether they keep the bars as the face lift will need a 04 onwards bar anyway and they said they don't keep them the bull bar places do I tried ARB and they said they give them all back
I think the guy was a bit bewildered as to why i wanted to remove a bull bar to replace it with a standard bar :?

think i got the gist with the body lift will look at the radiator when i get the truck again not mine yet!

parts have started to collect though already got rear OE flares and a new rear body and hopefully a front bar by saturday
and will start working out all my tanks for water etc and hot water system soon!

Thanks for the info on the lift :P

33's are going to kill your fuel economy... 31's equals about 10-15% more fuel in my '03 Triton

A Challenger front bumper was up for grabs here not long ago. Challenger is supposedly Triton based, so you could try that?
