it's the kind of car that gets traded a lot and has a lot of owners over the years and can have lack of maintainance etc due to the type of people (soccer mums) that drive them.
TJ's of the same year are usually $5000-$10000 more because they are harder to come by and usually have much much less klm on them.

why do they trade them a lot is it because of it being a faulty vehicle ?

Nothing wrong with an XJ, especially as a tow vehicle.
Get onto

They are a niche market vehicle, and as such some very good and well looked after vehicles owned by enthustiasts can be had for a good price.
I think if the cars you are seeing priced as cheap as you say, then they have had a hard life and are showing it.
The 97 Cherokee is the most capable off road vehicle in the class, cheap and easy to modify, with plenty of power, proven drive train and technology that is still easy to understand.

A 97 Grand Cherokee in good nick will sell for 16-17k private sale.
Carpoint will have a valuation section and this is good to use only as a guide.
You will get a lot more for your money with a Jeep when compared to other major manufacturers. And you even get to experience the Jeep thing.
Hope this helps.
