Petrol or diesel??

Possibly bigend bearings, very audible, sounds like someone smacking the block with a hammer.

Also, check to see if the exhaust has movement, and could possibly hit on anything.

Was my imagination

This sounds alot like an engine mount to me, get someone to look at it while you start it then stall it to stop etc.
