Help on KM11/83 4speed to 5speed gearbox

Hi Guys

i nearly bought a 85 wagon just for the 5speed box, my question is how similar are they in converting my KM L28 SWB11/83 to 5speed.?

The wagon was a 4.2 litre, 5speed.

is the power steering a bolt in job or lots of problems with it.?

with 5speed i have heard anything from main shaft is longer to gearbox mount moving, to tailshaft shortning.

please, can someone put me on the right track.

and yep compliance plate says KM160

Cheers

I'll take a stab in the dark and say that the gearbox won't fit.....

That's if the wagon was a TB42 or TD42, we didn't get those engines until the gq shape, rear diff is in the centre.

Was the rear diff in the wagon offset?
I'm assuming your rear diff is offset?

if so the gearbox you are looking for would look identical to yours except that instead of the box just bolting directly to the transfer there will be a 135mm housing the same shape as the box, between the gearbox and transfer - this contains reverse and fifth,
This would locate the transfer 135mm further back from the engine, meaning that rear shaft would be shorter and front longer.

Hi and Thanks for reply.

ok, firstly yes my KM is offset as far as rear diff is concerned.
my 4speed and transfer is all in one on a kinda slant.

secondly, aww i wish i knew if wagon is offset or not,but shifts were on the correct side, eg "gears on left, transfer on right".

so if i locate a 85patrol wagon or SWB with 5speed offset i have hit the bulls eye or close lol ??

I'm pretty sure though that you will need one out of a petrol - i.e. not the sd33 one.
two of the differences are:
The gearsticks are in different spots - the top covers can be swapped to remedy that.
The input shaft on the petrol is longer,
maybe pm v8patrol about this, he's swapped them before (i think between 5spd diesel and petrol??)
He went from a 4spd to a 5spd.
I've just got a standard 5spd diesel shorty and a 4spd petrol box in a ute with a chev in it.

What you want to know is that if you get a 5spd diesel box will your 4spd petrol input shaft go into it?

I just know that with the four speed boxes the input shaft is not swappeable between diesel and petrol boxes - i know because i tried and failed (the diesel has a larger input gear so it won't fit into the petrol box)

Good luck
