Quick question with my 5.29 diff ratios plus the standard 5sp box and 5.14s ill be at 99.42 to 1 were if i hang out for the 6.1s ill be at 118 to1 this set up must run 38 swampers standard motor car will be doing mostly rocks and rutted hill climbs with a small amount of mud .Should i get the 5.14s or go 6.1s

6.4's :D

when i had light 37's on mine compared to heavy swampers'
my crawl could have been a touch lower and i was at 108:1 with pretty strong motor and fuel injection

Hey Duncan

Just ran mine on 38 TSLs the other night. I have standard 5 speed, 6.1 and 4.55 lux diffs (about 100:1). No probs with the crawling

Seemed slow enough and had no issues turning the tyres. Tim could be right though, maybe a bit extra wouldn't hurt - but I wouldn't get carried away with huge crawl ratios ;)

still undecided as my last car was a GQ running 63 to 1 with the 38s was great but only used 1st low on rocks as it was to low everywhere else. But with the smaller motor and less torque thought going lower would be better but how low is to low would the difference between 100 to 1 and 118 to 1 be that different

duncan.. ill be going 18% reduction for my 31's... thus the difference is the difference between stock tyres with 18% reduction and 31's with no reduction!

BIG DIFFERENCE!!!

to look at it another way... 18% is pretty close to 20%... thats one fifth of 100%... almost a quarter more reduction! plus the other 100%... youll be redlining 1st gear at about 2km/hr! haha

Hehehe 18 is nearly 20 which is nearly 25 (1/4) Hehehe

BTW that is the high range reduction not low...

I don't mean to bag you but everytime you talk about gearing, I get really confused...

Cant realy see the zuk ever running in high range as everywhere i want to take it will be low range only and now shes going to be a trailerd rig so no worries just thought 118 might be to low but i dont no would prffer to not spend the dollars and make a mistake the first time but no one can tell me from experience as no ones else runs a zuk like this that i no

118 won't be too low for 38 swampers

118:1 isnt to low with a 1.3 if u wheel rocks (like solid rock with lots of grip u) will want lower

i'm at about 100ish to 1 with 36" TSL's and in low range its fine but high range sucks.

Agreed

May aswell do it right the first time ;)

Plus you can always use 2nd gear - cant go lower than 1st gear if it aint low enough

I didnt mean to drop you in it Dewse but I was just thinking of swapping the t5ransfer cases over for a day the just taking it for a cruise along a trck. You dont have to do any hard core stuff but at least you will get an idea of how slow the crawl will be

The best thing would be if duncan could bring it out to shanes, then we could chuck it in and wheel his property just as a test.

Redzook yes we do wheel intense rock. I found I wanted lower then the 6.1:1 with 3.7 on 33's. (and now I will)

AS low as possible on the rocks is best

Watch what you say coz some people do not agree with this. Rock will always have fine's on top of it to make it break traction....then you need wheel speed. If your to low you won't make it. But then we have the problem of not habving enough touque to run higher gears.

Refer to Ruff's comments on gears in the general tech section.

Well after serious consideration and talking to a few people who no a lot about wheelin hard i decided and bought the 5.14s from Eddie for $1080 will be fitting them Thursday then strenghten up the transfercase mounts .Ofcourse i get on here tonight to get a email from Liam trying to help me out and he has tracked down a brand new set of 6.1s sitting on a shelf which the owners want to get rid of so if anyone else is looking for 6.1s aparently Yarra Valley 4wd in Victoria have some they want rid of should beable to get at a good price

Yes, i get your point, but when crawling, you want to go as low as possible for control, when you need speed, just pick another gear.

The instructions that came with the gears are very easy to read and have clear pictures all the gears look to be excellently made should be easy will post some photos and how long to do you do need bearing pullers to do the job

I'm glad you got some clear instructions.. Mine were used to catch oil on the grond.

You will only need a puller for half day or so. Fairly simple job.

I have the pullers if you wan't to borrow them

Thanks for the offer Drew but ive got some .

So far ive pulled case from car stripped of all 3 yokes and the out put small cover and shaft everything going great then it fell in a heap .The instructions say to remove a plug which keeps a spring and ball retained that sits on the longer shift fork no worries then it says undo bolts split case its possible that it may foul on shift fork and it did and so far i cant see how to get it out so ill have tohave a in depth look tomorrow unless someone else can shed some light on it

maybe was supposed to be in neutral or some other shift position before disassembly..just a guess, have no idea.. christover
