The A denotes the family of engine. All A series engines share a similar block pattern.
The 4 gives the capacity in the A series meaning here 1.6L. It has no relevance to other engine families. eg the 4E engine is 1.3L
The G means wide ange twin cam head design, as apposed to F which means narrow angle twin cam head. Common to all Toyota engines.
The E means EFI. Common to all toyota engines.
