oil change
oil change
Ive just purchased a new GU 3 litre. Im planning to do the 5000k oil changes myself and get Nissan to do the 10 000k services. Nissan inform me that they use a castrol magnatek full synthetic oil for their oil changes. where can i getthis oil at the right price. $14 a litre from Nissan.
this oil seams dealer specific oil as the usual place sell castrol magnatek but no the full synthetic stuff. any ideas.

I would use any quality diesel oil of the correct viscosity and grade. Check owners handbook for viscosity rating and grade. Cheapest way for most people is to buy 20 litre drum from distributor or truck spares place. But you need to decant it into a 5 litre container for pouring into motor or get an oil pump to fit drum. I'd be surprised if Nissan specified full synthetic oil, especially with 5000k oil changes. I suspect what the dealer is telling is you is a way for them to make a bit more on servicing costs.
oil changes
IMHO
There are only two advantages in using a semi synthetic oil.
Increased protection on below freezing start-ups
Better long term stability with hi-lo viscosity oil ie. 5-40 10-40
If the temperatures in you country did not go to extreme lows then I would think a 15-40 mineral oil with CG rating would protect as well as any semi synthetic and save you money as well. Oil companys rub there hands with glee when selling semi synthetics.
Cheers Alex

Pretty sure if you wanted to, that you could buy something like RX super castrol (as long as it meets all the specs required by the motor) and change it when you like and when you take it for a service you could give them 10 litres of it to put in, shouldn't void the warranty as long as it meets or exceeds the requirements.
RX super is a pretty good oil (mack, cummins, merc etc) and about $40 for 5 litres.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots
Mobil Delvac MX is a 15W40 multigrade oil exceeds current standards fo CH4, CI4 etc and only cost $68-$80 a 20L drum (depending on quantity purchased)
RX Super is very similar and meets CH4 cost $80-100 a 20L drum (depending on quantity purchased)
When buying oils go direct to the wholesaler for your area and save heaps!!!
