As above, fitting a gm pump on a 3b deisel but it has being brought to my attention that you cant fit a pump below the box, looking for thoughts and suggestions

i just replied to your other thread. use a V6 pump, with your bracket. run a remote reservoir. the v6 and v8 pumps are the same, except for the body, which has a built in reservoir in the v8 type. i can get you a new or reco pump fairly cheap.

Thoughts on this reply

Who says?
It's hydraulic, the pump has no idea if it's pumping uphill.......now you "might" have a problem with the reservoir wanting to overfill when dead, but they make a clamp on extension for that reservoir about 12" with a dipstick, look for it on Chrysler FWD cars..........

its not that the pump cant be below it but when its stationary or travveling down hill the fluid will flow back to the pump and overflow the resovoir

and i dunno about you but i wouldn risk running out of fluid in a $500 steering box

A 2.8 hilux has the pump down low on the passengers side about the same hieght as the box, but it has a remote resivor up on the passengers guard.

Another pic to show the relationship with the box

I`d go with a remote res if you can`t mount that pump higher then the box.

yup id go a remote resovoir pump

i wouldnt trust a power stering box on a extention on that pump

it should be simple to mod a remote resevoir pump go visit a wreckers and find one with the same mount and be done with it

It should still work alright but try to make the lines as long as possible mates 45 with 308 and same pump overheated the pump and box cause the lines where to short Hj75 has a loop running across the front under the rad on the return line to cool fluid or ea-ed falcons have small coolers under radiator. The cap that screws on should be fairly tight to stop water getting in.

I have this setup,
works fine and doesn't have any issues. No special mods/res etc.

My pump sits abolut chassis height and the box is in the normal FJ40 spot.

Mounting the pump/res lower would present no problem as when the system has been running it bleeds itself of air. But being in a 4B that chance of water/mud ingress would be a problem with the pump/res being mounted so low in the engine bay.

Hmmm I hadn't thought of that,

Better steer away from water more than 1m deep or more.

Thanks for your imput guys
I have spoke to a Power steering place today who are making my hose's, He had a look at some photo's of the location and he has no problem with it
I do have a plan to stop water or mud entering via the filler

and im hoping you are fitting a cooling line infront of the radiator or a actuall cooler??
there really really short lines so theres gonna be no cooling going on

I may fit a cooler at a later stage but power steering guy reckon not really needed with the tyres I am running.

Also he mentioned that they make up a Gm (saginaw) pump to retro fit inplace of a standard landcruiser pump

not really needed ???

so does this mean that
its not needed
that it may be needed but he dosnt really know
its reccomended to fit one
its a good idea to fit one

a cooler will only cost you 25-30bux go to wreckers and get a power steering cooler from a small japo car considering you have toi get custom lines made whats the point in paying to get them made twice again after you fit the cooler ???

and anyway once you have power steer you will end up getting bigger tyres

by bj42turbo
yeah good point Casey
I assume the cooler gets spliced in the return hose

Posted: Mon Mar 07, 2005 5:30 pm
by pcman
yes
the return line is lower pressure so have it run through the cooler then to the pump :)

Sorry, what I was saying is that a cherokee has one, and I only paid $30
for one.
Most vehicles don't seem to have one, just a pipe running accross the airflow.
