Hi guys,

The in dash toyota guage appeared to be fubarred as it would read maximum prssure when the car is cold and below L when its hot. So i fitted an aftermarket one, much to my surprise the pressure shot to 100psi(guage max) cold at 2000revs, not wanting to damage this guage i just paid $75 for, i swapped it for another guage i had lying around that goes to 1000KPA (~150psi)

Cold im getting about 220kpa (~70psi) idle and 700kpa(~100psi) at 2000rpm

At temperature im getting about 30psi idle and 70psi at 2000rpm, doesnt move much higher even at 2500rpm.

The toyota repair manual says it should be 3.6psi or more at idle and 65-85psi at 3000rpm when engine is at temp.

So at temp my pressures seem great for a motor with a few k's on it, but im worried about the pressure when its cold. Anyone encountered this before on a 2H, on any motor? could it be sludge/blockages in the block somewhere?

I have changed the oil pressure relieve valve and spring, and also slightly linished the bore and im positive it cannot be this causeing the problem anymore. I also changed my oil and the problem is still the same, didnt change the oil filter but its only about 8000k's old. Will try this next if you guys havent got any other ideas.

Generally oil pressure is higher when the engine is cold because the oil isn't as viscous and free flowing. Cold oil is much thicker, therefore gives a high oil pressure reading.

All the 2h's i have seen have high oil pressure when cold and low oil pressure at idol when the oil warms up.

yeh i figured that, but isnt 100+psi a little excessive?

My H motor gets to 600 kPa on cold startup and once it's warm, it drops to about 350 kPa when I'm driving. at warm idle it drops to not much at all, but increases with more RPM. ;)
