Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi people.
Just after some pics of peoples high steer or x-over steer. Have searched, but most old pics are gone. Am going spoa soon and working out my steering. Have a z-link for the initial isntall, but is will only be there very short term. Who has made there own, as thats what im looking at. Thought about using the merc. steering arms, but am unsure about the strength of the caliper mounting position. Any opinions welcome too.

my hi steer mounts to the calliper had it for twelve months there doesnt seem to be any strength issues i run a welded front with 32s so theres a fair amount of stress on it at times seems to be holding up fine.

So if it does go you loose both steering and brakes, nice combo . .

i am not a big fan of the caliper mount being used as a point for the steering arm as the mount was never designed with those forces in mind, nor have I ever seen an engineered vehicle (from a major vehicle manufacturer, or one of the modded 4x4 engineered) vehicle with this sort of setup.. have a look at the size of the brackets that the factory engineers consider nessecary just to deal with the braking forces and torque.

My opinion is that the bolt on arms can be quite OK if properly made and pick up the king pin as well as caliper.. if possible should also have a brace to the old bit of the knuckle..
Unless you weld very well and have above average booty fab skill I would stay away from the DIY stuff here. I did run with home made steering arms, and did not have any signifigant issues in 5+ years with big rubber and alot of kilometers.
If you do "do it yourself" consider upgrading the studs in the king pin, as well as using cone washers (like the washers in your free wheel hubs) and check frequently that they are tight (locktight is pretty cheap) ..

i will dig up a pic of my steering arm as a guide.. but if i were to do it again .. I would probarbly stick with a Z link until I could afford a properly built\engineered "system" like the cast knuckle that droopypete is running.

And before people call BS on the caliper mount bracket, I recall a year or two ago in one of the 4x4 mags they busted one of the caliper mounts on a crusier or patrol during a winch dyno shootout.. And they are freaking huge compared to Zuk units..

mine came from overkill not home made so the quality is good.

Cheers for the replys. If you could get a picture of ya old setup Guy that would be great. I was considering a setup that used the kingpin bolts, and upgrading them at the same time. If anyone has got some pics could ya post them or e-mail the to me.

Cheers Guy. That was pretty much what i was thinking. Now the spoa is done, i gonna get stuck into it, so hopefully will be done soon.

from what i've read if you're goin to drive on the street go over the top but buy it from a well known company stearing is nothing to play with . but with the z link they give you a little extra play . and i heard that it will give you the death wobble . the post on the benz arms looks pretty good . i think that's the way i'm goin to go
