Gday people

My old man is buying a new GU patrol 3.0td in the near future (probaly when they give the free bullbar and lights again). He has some reservations about the automatic trnasmission in this model and is wanting to find some information out.

Is there any weaknesses with this transmission and why is is mated to a less powerful motor than the manual and why is it rated to tow less?

Is the transmission the same as in the 6 cylinder petrol motor (in which case I'll make sure he asks for a dipstick)? I doubt this as the petrol produces higher power an torque than the 3.0td yet they cut the power down on the auto and reduce its towing capacity.

Does the auto cope alright with the offroad work and towing something like a camper trailer?

Would fitting something like the d-tronic stress this tranny to much?

The only info I found in the bible regarding the tranny was the dipstick problem (unbelieveable) and that was the petrol model.

Cheers for any help you can provide.

Stuart

Have driven alot of the 3.0's with auto for work in a range of terrains and towing also. Have not experienced any trouble with auto, nor has anyone else where I work. They're good on the sand and for towing off road.
I'm not vouching for the 3.0 motor that's why I own a 4.2 :D

Cheers for response speed=t/d.

Can anyone tell me the make and model of the automatic transmission in both the 4.8 and the 3.0td? ie my disco has a ZF 4hP22.

3.0 would be Jatco RE4R03A if its the same as earlier models, the 4.8 has the new 5-speed RE5R ??

And I dont think it is mated to a less powerful motor?, it is the auto transmission that is limiting the max towing capacity.
