GU 4" lift

Ok,

so ive read the GU bible like 4 times...
I went to the local 4x4 shop yesterday and they say that i dont need engineering cert. for 4" lift. Most of the forums say otherwise.

He gave me quote for lift kit and said i will need adjustable panhard rods and also quoted that. He didnt include a price for castor plates, brake line ext etc etc... so i dont know if i need them or not...

what will i NEED for a 4" lift? is anyone 100% positive that they know exactly what is required?

PLEASE help me...

The biggest factor that this hinges on is EXACTLY what height will the coils raise the vehicle, over the STANDARD height, ie with standard wheels and tyres and the roof at the height mentioned in the factory manual. Not all 4" kits will raise the rig exactly 4".

hey hows it going

i know of some people who are running 4" lifts and all they had was longer shocks and coils (EFS). Brakes lines wernt done nor were panhards.

However on my GU wagon i have 2" OME but its sits higher than some 3" lifts, and on the hoist if i was to go any more lift i would have have to extended brake lines and diff breather otherwise they are going to be ripped off at full articulation.

and my panhards well, i can see that my wheels are sitting to the right so if i go any more lift it would be best to put panhards.

I guess it also depends on whether they do it properly.

IMHO, you need castor correction, panhards, longer brake line and extended breathers, shock and springs ... and if your shocks are genuinely long enough then extended bump stops/shock mounts.

But I'm sure there are plenty of people who will do it for much less.

your in Qld, good luck gettin it engineered.

Talk to engineer b4 you get a woody... he will deflate it rather quick.

Pm me If you would like in depth info, I'm not going to post up tech like this on an open forum.

what seems to be the problems with engineering in qld that you know of? I thought 4" wouldnt be that tough to get certified?? And the local TJM bloke said you didnt need to at all it was completely road worthy? Im gonna try the ARB place this arvo to see what they have to say....

Has more to do with the panhard rods, than the actual height.

Suspension height is a self clearance item, to conform to the regulation of increasing the height of no more than 1/3 of the original bump stop clearance, and no more than 1/3 extension in the droop mode of suspension cycle.

2" is mathematically the height you can raise it, no shop will guarantee how high the rig will end up after the coils are fitted.

ok, so if i say wanted to do a 3" lift, and the bloke said i probably wouldnt really need panhards for that, what would need engineering? etc...

by Dee
ok, so i guess no one knows...

So what your saying is that the bumpstops need to be modified if its over 2" lift, and if its a 4" lift you need to get panhards castor plates etc which need engineering.

Say I went 3" lift. I modified bumpstops to keep it legal. if i didnt quite need panhards or castor plates and brake lines etc then I wouldnt have to get engineer cert?

Im just slightly concerned about fitting 35's under a 3" lift...

It all sounds too hard dosent it? fcukin austrailan government for ya....

spoke to arb.

fully illegal will never find an engineer in qld who will touch a 4 in lift according to them... and 2 in is wats legal, and he said 3 is borderline probably get away with 3 cos dont need panhards etc.

question is, can i can i can i fit 35's under a GU with 3 inch???

i go offroad a fair bit but theres not alot around here that gets it flexing too badly so im hoping it shouldnt rub, a fair bit of beach work tho where i live... and i want 35 mtr's.. or do i have to go 33's.
is there any in-betweens?

what does everyone think?

better still does anyone have this combination?

2 inch and thats it. Changing the bump stops won't matter because dept transport have already cottened on to that. Although there is no technical data from nissan to say what the exact height is. A friend of mine had his car at dept of transport for a long time, has about eight plates on it for the 4 inch lift and a book of documents that must reside in the car. They went over everything and had testing done on the car as well. Would not approve the tyres though. The adjustable arms etc had to carry certification as well before dept of transport would approve it. Depends if you want to take your car down there......................be it on your head. As for tyres I've seen enough people get done around here now therefore selling the 35's after easter, not worth the risk. Although a friend of mine got pulled up and fined in a GU with a 3inch lift and 285's

i can fit my 35's mtrs under my GU with stock ARB suspension am running LTR shocks but OME XXVD coils (the hardest ones) because i'm running a rear bar and front bar .

you dont really need 4" if your concerned about running 35's.

pics of my truck are in the members section

im not too worried about getting fines etc. because its not going to be on the road THAT much. its only a weekend car. im more worried about insurance. if i prang with a 3 inch lift and 35's where am i at you know?

35's are not legal at all even though someone at townsville got them passed :?
if you are going to put 35's on you might as well go the 4 inch lift as well other than that its 2 inch and 33's although plenty of people get around with 8 inches of lift and 35's and above

How legal do you want to keep it? 35's will push it over, even 33's may take it over the 15mm limit - not sure what tyres you have from the factory/on the placard.

Bump stops must stay original.

50mm Body lifts are an approvable item, best to do this as the first mod before anything else, as vehicle must pass a full pit inspection at DOT station - best not to have any extras that will catch the eyes.

Won't need longer panhard rods for 3 inch, won't need caster plates either - caster bushes will suffice.

Won't need longer brake lines, maybe longer rear breather hose.

Will need longer swaybar link pins.

Won't need adjustable upper arms for the rear - to correct the pinion angles on the rear driveshaft.

Everything is a compromise.

well obviously we all know thats fcuked... but how the hell do you all get around in fourbys with 37's and 6+ inch lifts?!?!? in almost new patrols? registered? in almost new patrols!?!?!?
do u have insurance? if i lift it 2 and hit some 35's like morkz wagon then ill still be screwed.

its called where u live i reckon

living in N.S.W all me and my mates have lifted trucks and all have run 35s, its a worry for insurance and if u did kill someone

therefore it aint a worry in the point that cops have pulled us over for speeding etc and never said anything about the trucks. they always pass pink slips

however as u grow a little older u start relsing the seriounous of not keeping things legal and therefore on my new rig im planing on keeping it legal

most people dont say anything.

one other thing as well when i was in queensland for the winch challenge i saw some many trucks with minimum 4" lift and 35' however with a wagon 35's on alloys look tiny (thats the secret)....

everyone still asks me are they 33's they're 35's and its hard to pick

they alloys make them look small which is a bonus

this whole thread is about trying to keep it legal. and if 2" lifts and 33's is barely legal then australian government can once again get f*cked.

Im sick of it. cant do shit these days with out someone sueing the arse off someone else...

i may as well not get it insured at all. im not covered when 4x4 driving. and im not going to be on the road all that much except for to and from trips. may as well put the money to better use and go the 4" with 35's.

its a wicked world we live in...

People just take the risk.

Don't be put off, do the research, get the facts, you'd be surprised what sort of rig you can build up, if you have all the facts ;) ;)

My biggest gripe is that parts of the industry are mis-informed, or on the flipside, industry are reluctant to inform people of the facts incase they get mis-quoted.

tcis?

this is screwed i just want straight forward answers. Everywhere i go i get told something different. does anyone know any engineers in qld?

if an engineer passes it and i get it insured could the insurance co still turn around and not pay up?

thanks for all your help by the way everyone its great...

Dude, listen to what people are sayin.

YOU ARE NOT GUNNA GET ANYTHING OVER 2" SUS LIFT ENGINEERED IN QLD.

You have to make a choice, run 2" and live with it or run taller and be illegal.

In QLD you can't have your cake and eat it too.

PS, no engineer in Oz will engineer anything over 33" tyres anymore.

yeah it sucks but what can u do....

most 4bys arent legal

i'm sure my exhaust and emmisions arent going to be legal

but how precise do u go...

what about all the rangie out there with 29" standard tyres running flares and 33's they arent legal

law states in vic u cant go larger than 20mm from standard or to that effect.

everyone just takes that risk, but in the end it will turned pear shape

ok all,

thanks for the help.

One (1) more question though. When you say engineers wont touch anything over 33's. does that still mean you have to get the 33's certified or can u just slap em on and go?

Qld has a different system than the other states, hence the reference from the vic and nsw guys to the engineers reports. Tyres in QLD are a self clearance item, you don't need to apply to fit differnt wheel or tyre combos, as long as they meet the regulations. The reg is that the overall tyre diameter of the intended tyre must not be larger than 15mm over the largest tyre offered by the manufacturer of that model vehicle, or the largest tyre indicated on the tyre placard. DOT have on file the tyres that are fitted to each model vehicle.

Currently there is no facility to have an engineer deem the vehicle is safe with larger tyres, and have QLD DOT accept the engineers recommendation. The DOT limit is still 15mm larger, no more.

33's wont get passed in an inspection situation, however anecdotal evidence has proven that many vehicles do get around with 33's, 35's and even 37's without detection.

I think we have lost the plot a bit guys, you want a horn lookin truck don't you? Then go the 4" lift & you will need the following. (to suit GU wagon petrol manual ST) long travel shocks-raised front bump stops-caster plates-(1 deg per inch)-long diff breather's-longer brake lines-shorten top 2 rear links by 18mm-2 panard rods-15mm front cntl arm spacers for 36" tyres-only raise rear bump stops if you worry about under rear arch paint-reverse rear tail shaft so skinny end at t/case- remove sway bars. Last thing to do is drive the shit out of it and have a bit of fun, might get run over by a bus tomorrow. :D
