Does anyone know if a pto from an early 4speed will work on a 84 with a 5speed. if not why not and what are the differences that make it impossible. (Note: mods can be made to make it work).

I assume you have the PTO already on your older 4 spd?

Check the PTO gear hatch/coverplate on the side of the transfer case and compare it to the newer box. If the bolt pattern is different no go, but if the bolt pattern is the same you'll be right.

no i dont already have one.

I have come across one pretty cheap and it is off a 40series and i was wanting to try to fit it on my 5speed 60series. But i want to find out if it will fit before i buy it.

there are two types of PTO .... you need the late model type ie 60 / 75 series .... 40 series PTO wont fit

Late model 40s have the same PTO output as the 60, I put a 60 pto on my 40. I got it with selector mounts for both 4 and a 5 speed gearboxes.
Checking the pto coverplate bolt pattern is the answer, the early model transfer cases will not take the 60/75 ptos but the later split case will.

scotto you are 100% correct ... late model 40 and 47 series had 5 speed g/boxs

both pto types (early & late) have 6 mounting bolts but the difference is LATE model bolt pattern is symetrical and EARLY isnt

You can make it work. Look here to see how some French guy did it.
