help with any 18R info.

and yes, i have had a good search.
is there a EFI version of the 18R? i think the 22R comes in both carby and efi, and that they are a good swap as no need to change the mounts or bell housings.
is the 18R carby motor any good? is it strong? i take it its a SOHC? what about internals and forced induction? also, i've read that it runs on LEADED fuel, and not ULP, or PULP. what can i do to get it on ULP for starters, or should i just find a good 22R to drop in?
i haven't seen either the 18R or 22R yet, and was doing some research before i go ahead and spend any money.
its not going into a 4wd either. its going into an old school celica i may be getting as a project car. the celica is a 76 model i think, and was wondering if anyone else knows what gear box they come with? is it a 4 speed or 5 speed? i know this may not be the absolute right place for this post, but i'm more interested in the motor.
the motor in question is a carby 18R, but it does have a turbo and manifold to suit. will i be able to use this on the 22R, as in, are the manifolds the same?
what do people usually replace the 18R with? 22R? what other motors in this series will use the same engine mounting points? and be able to fit the bell and gear box?
thanks for any info, its much appreciated. most other hi-po car forums just give you stick about stuff like this.
P.S, any one got specs on these motors, and power out puts?
thanks
Steve

The 2l 18rg is the twin overhead cam I think it has a yamaha head on it ideal for twin carbs or efi turbo. The 22R is 2.4l so the increase in power output is easier also a crossflow type engine not like the 18R which has intake exhaust on same side. The bellhousing are slightly different in there dowel locations. but the four main bolts are the same. If you are doing a engine swap you should go for the 22R to start with try looking for an RN85 2wd ute as a donour for engine and gearbox.

The 18r is sohc.
Yes they are strong, but also heavy.
I turboed one and it handled up to 14 psi boost with standard internals, only mod was decompression plate and two head gaskets.
I had a mustang type celica for a couple of weeks about 15 years ago with the 18r,went well in a celica, not so good in a hilux.
I believe the 18r puts out a massive 64 kilowatts at the flywheel so they are no powerhouse.
Hope this helps.

I had an 18RG in a 77 Celica. Fark it was fun no power house by todays standards but more fun the the old 18r donk.
Sean Molloney in Melbourne is the man to talk to, he has extensive knowledge in all these types of motors and a TRD supplier. This was his # 03 94285277 when I contacted him

thanks for all the info. helps a lot.
now, for more in depth info...
decompression plate? what is it, and how is it installed? for turbo-ing, i've been told to run low compression in these motors, and something like 7.4:1 was ideal. what is the standard comp ratio for the 18R-c?
hiluxV8: can you give any more info on what set up you used to have? was it carby or efi turbo? and what compression were you running?
i've heard that when turbo'd, these motors constantly blow the gaskets betweens cylinders number 2 and 3. true or false? and is there any possible solutions apart from shaving the head into a banana shape?
thanks for all the help. and sorry if i shound like such a newb, i've not had much experience with toyota motors.

A decompression plate is the cheap way to drop the compression ratio, basically a piece of steel plate 1 1/2-2mm thick.looks a bit like a steel head gasket. No idea what the compression ratio was,but i'd say it was in the mid to low sevens. I ran 7:1 in my twin turbo 308 but that was with trw blower pistons and stainless o-rings around the top of the bores. I had no head gasket problems with the 18r.
The setup i ran was a suck through side draught carby setup. I used a 40mm solex, which is similiar to a weber and i believe an 18rg carb.( i think they ran 2 of these)

ok, now seeing as i got the celica now and all the parts that came with it, it looks as though theres enough parts for a complete engine, but how do you put it together?
that was a bit vague. anyway, what i'm worried about is the timing of the cam and the pistons. how is this set up from scratch?
i was thinking about getting one of those workshop manuals, but someone said to me that they were not a good help? any light on this?
will get pics up if people want.
cheers
Steve
p.s the motor is a 18R-c SOHC, comes with a turbo manifold set up, looks as though it will work and is comeplete. has carby for turbo too.
i thought being a SOHC it would be easier to set it up.
thanks

Get the manual mate.Whoever told you that probably cant read. You need to get top dead centre on the compression stroke, line up timing marks etc etc.The manual will make it easy. Are you doing the engine up etc?.from memory the 18r has a top and bottom timing chain and a couple of tensioners, you may want to see if they need replacing before putting it all together.

thanks a lot hiluxV8, will be looking at getting a shop manual.
the motor is already in pieces, as it was pulled apart for inspection but never put back together. i will be picking all of it up on sunday, so i will be able to get pics to help you help me.
thanks.
and yes, we are looking at 'rebuilding' the motor, as there is a turbo and minifold made up already for the 18R, we just want to get it running and go from there. and the celica RA23 comes free with the motor and stuff. i guess it will be a long term project.
if we get the 18R running, then sweet, and if it blows up, *sigh* oh well, time for SR20t.
you know how it is, thanks again.
