Pity you are in Vic as I have a good 4 speed for sale as I am doing a ZF auto conversion soon and don't need it.

It's quite good (doesn't jump out of Low range otr geear, not too noisy for a LT95). But like Micheal said, patience and a good workshp manual would be the go.

Good luck with it.

I have got the box on the work bench, but am having trouble with the manual. The Haynes one is very breif on the gearbox, today I had a browse at the genuine Range Rover manual. It had how to remove and refit the different parts of the box, though it made mention of a lot of specilist LR tools with part no's .That I don't what they are or if they are really needed.I was also hoping for some more imformation on the process of rebuilding and how to inspect for wear or damage.
Does any one know if a more detailed manual exists.

Just a bit of history two years ago I had terrible noises and clunks coming from the box .I got quotes for a rebuild.I did go with the cheapest.
Qoute x dollars
x days
Finally picked it up after 3 times x days and I was presented with a bill for 1.5 times x dollars.(without a phone call)
The oil filler plug bolts were rounded off.
It leaked oil
It was still noisy
And after 2 years it howls, jumps out of range, leaks every where etc .
I know you get what you pay for .
So I will give it a shot myself

I have rebuilt these without special tools.

One thing that some overlook and causes a lot of noise is missing the plastic tip from the hi/low selector arm (rattles in the selector fork). Use some oil resistant plastic tube.

You might like to get the spare parts catalogue from Four Wheel Drives (03) 9890 0509 www.fwd.com.au This has parts list (not rover part no's) and exploded diagrams that helped me.
