LPG and snorkel

I have a mate with a 1993 Maverick that was converted to gas by a previous owner. Unfortunately they just mounted the gas carb on top of the normal carb with an exposed air filter around it! Quite aside from the fact that he is sucking hot air, the filter gets clogged with dust very quickly.

To solve both these problems, he wants to fit a snorkel. He has a quote of a few hundred dollars to box in the filter and normal snorkel prices to fit the snorkel. Now there must be lots of people with snorkels and gas out there so I figured that we should ask around before he goes out and spends lots of money.

Thanks in advance.

Richard.

i have a IMPCO air filter surround for that vehicle that he could have for 100$

then just attach snorkle..

LPG does not like forced air so turn the snorkel head around running it backwards.

gidday,

its not that LPG does not like forced air,
Its the MIXER's with diaphrams that dont like air being forced passed them because the diaphram wont work correctly, it should only work under intake vacume...

First, I'm the friend in question above.

I wasn't aware LPG setups do not need air actively pused through the system. You learn something new every day :-)

Another one for you then - when I'll be installing the snorkel I may be interested in fitting an air filter of the kind with the circular fan-pulled dust separation mechanism (don't remember what they're called, the thing that works like a dyson vacum cleaner). They pull air in from the bottom using a fan, and I'm interested in how well these get along with LPG setups.

i dont seem to have a problem with LPG with the snorkel forwards, the only time i turn the snorkel around is in the bush to avoid dust and mud getting in.

I would have thought that the ram effect from a snorkel would be just enough to overcome the restriction of the snorkel itself?

aris: You are thinking about the Donaldson aircleaner I think.

a donaldson wont do anything to LPG setup.

hottiemonster, you must not be getting good airflow though your snorkle. because if it was properly flowing into a mixer with a large DIAPHRAM such as the 300a you would experience some issues when the airpressure built up in the snorkle.

hmmm not sure then, the car runs fine with the snorkel facing forward. i am not sure if the gas setup was modified before i bought the car, but as soon as i bought the snorkel i put it straight on without modifying anything and nearly always have it facing forward.

I am the same LPG with snorkel facing forward

what are the symptoms of this being bad?

thats actually a very good question! anyone? i have had mine facing forward for about 14 months and i have had no mechanical problems on the car other than a start motor.

I have a forward facing snorkel. It used to cough a bit and then be gutless(even more than usual). On the back of my converter in the centre was a threaded hole.I was told to run a hose from there to where the snorkel comes thru the body.Apparently this equalises the converter and now it runs better. Its a Torque gas converter and i have been told that its to small for my car but even so it did make a difference after this mod.
Hope it helps.

OK Normal Ram or Dust collector bowl works fine on LPG.

The diaphram must have a balance tube (hose) between the housing and the inlet side of aircleaner .

This keeps mixture correct to airflow and prevents stalling under decell.

Bazzle, thanks for the info. In this setup, do you have a filter mounted on the gas carb still or an airbox separate?

Here's a pic of my carby (sorry for the ugly blue tint, it's a phonecam) and the completely exposed air filter on top.
The carby breathes in from the inside, as do the two tubes going out the top (center goes to the gas system, the one on the right goes to the breather from the rocker cover (I think).

I'm not entirely sure how one encapsulates the entire thing in a case without putting the carby in the case. That's to say I need the case to hermetically latch onto the carby (or am I wrong?)

Can someone enlighten me as to how this is done?

Thanks!

A filter cover with bottom edge sealed with a split hose around edge, and a snorkel on inlet.

(no pix vehicle sold)

if your not having issues with the snorcle facing forward its because the intake is to restrictive for there to be an issue with ram-air effect at speed anyway.

or your already reving the arse of the engine at high speeds anyway :)

it woudl only matter at high speed where the air going through the snorkle is faster than the speed of the air being sucked into the engine, this is dependant on engine capasity and RPM's

if you have no issues with it then good :)

SORRY to but in on your thread rlaxton but if i can ask aris a question please?
aris my impco unit(which i havent put on yet) has a small vacuum hose on the top.Where does this go?

Thanks rlaxton

No worries, although I can probably answer that question based on my experience with aris' unit. It probably goes over to your rocker cover breather hose. For emissions reasons, your engine is not allowed to leak gas to anywhere but its own intake.

I have a snorkel adapter to Impco gas:

Yep i understand that one goes to the tappet cover and one goes to the converter but the one i`m talking about is a small vacuum hose?

Sorry, no idea then. Unless it is the balance tube that bazzle was talking about? Pictures?

i hooked it up to a vacuum supply and it sucked up the plate inside the mixer.

CBO,

its for running dual fuel. When you flick the switch to petrol, another solenoid connected to this hose will allow vacume and lift the diaphram to allow the air to enter the carby without operating the diaphram on the lpg mixer. Older mixers had cable operated ones.

i'd be interested to see how people have made their round airbox seal up without silicon, so that you can change the filter and seal it again, like the original 1's do.

i have one of these on mine, but a cable operated one for old skool mixers  although its very stiff and hard to pull out anymore than about 10mm

An answer and a question here.

Marin, I've just hooked up my snorkel to the
impco air intake with a rather err.. creative method.
I've only just converted to gas, so I still had the snorkel attachment for the old air filter box, which was just hanging free near the impco, I've chopped up a 2ltr juice bottle to seal over the end of the snorkel pipe which is kinda square, the size of the body of the juice bottle. The impco end is still squarish just smaller, so I chopped the top of off the bottle far enough for it to just fit over the impco.

It seals pretty well, before this it was running pretty rough, I assume cos of dodgey airflow. Now its much smoother. Now the question, will the juice bottle survive the effects of engine heat etc..
or should I expect to find melted plastic in a few days ? :)

i ended up getting rid of the rectangular adaptor and making another adaptor plate on the side of my air box (i have a metal one) and using a piece of 3 inch exhaust pipe, next thought is to make an intake like the one in the pics above, also have to make the airbox open from the top, instead of the top and sides lifting as one piece, should be a simple cut and weld, or to make it permanently closed and puting some sort of inline filter elsewhere....... oh yeah, and then the whole point of this excercise, make the snorkel :D
