zorst legalities

Just got a ute cab on the patrol,
the zorst is hitting, i thought it would clear at the front but hits by an inch.
i dont want to run 1 inch body lift to clear it.......
so thinking of cutting the back half off and just shortening down for the moment to run 2 dumps just past the back of the enclosed cab so i can clear the body.....
how far behind the last opening window / door etc can the back of the exorst be???

from memory
NSW regs say 300mm behind last opening window
but thats to dump out the side
rear has to go to the most external part of the body line.....even on a ute i think
maybe u'd get away with somethin shorter if not running a normal tray

side pipes on Screwys rig will be a no go at all, as they will point directly into the windows of cars in the next lane, if you want to find out about exhause legalities, your best bet is an engineer or a fuly qualified exhaust shop.

many hotrods
obviously going to depend on the application
but i'm sure the rules r.....300mm or so behind last opening window
and.....i dont think it has specs on height.....but if it was high , maybe point them down a bit

Sidepipes are not legal on Cobra's/Hotrods.
Most of them have fake pipes or only run them on the track.

• The exhaust outlet, if to the side of the vehicle, must
discharge to the right hand side of
the vehicle and downwards at an

• The exhaust outlet, if to the rear of
the vehicle, must discharge at not
more than 10 degrees above or 45
degrees below the horizontal.

The paragraph Hybrid has highlighted it a direct exerpt from ADR42 & is correct. If you read that it will give you a few ideas for the exhaust outlet. Basically if it is now a ute then side pipes are ok out the right hand side but not the left. The reason they are not legal on most vehicles is because the last unsealed joint is the boot or tailgate & as a ute cab has neither then this should be OK, its just convincing the state inspector of this.
There is no requirement for the exhaust to be over the diff or anything like that. The rules are designed to keep the exhaust from being near doors & windows.
There is no rule for the protection of other road users except for pedestrians, thats why it cant exit to the left.
Pity... big V8 + dual sidepipes = beautiful stereo exhaust note which would put a horn on a jellyfish.

well then in saying that.....
I should be able to run 2 dumps straight out the back of the cab about 400mm without them going to the side, just straight backwards....
similar to cheezy exaust but with 2 of em??

I was told by an engineer inspecting my pos thast my pipe is illegal because 1) It doesn't exceed 300mm beyond the last opening window.
2) Left hand dump pipes were outlawed in 1989(1980 something).
So yes you can dump it out so long as it is 300mm behind the cab and not deemed to be a denger to anyone on your left.
But my gawd isn't it fun to pull up on the right of a ricer at the lights with his window down and give the old diesel a big farken rev as I take off
