BUT! his missis can only drive an auto and he needs a seven seater to fit in the rugrats! so for a seven seater auto seven seater, ( between say 1980 and 1986 model) what would be best? nissan or toymota? deisel or petrol? please help him decide! thanks

I dont think there are many choices in that age bracket as Nissan didnt have an auto Patrol till the GQ and Toyota the late 60 series.
That leaves the Range rover or a Cherokee with a rear kiddy seat.

And the Mercedes G-Wagen - 3L diesel and auto. But they are usually still $$$, and they were slow and used a lot of fuel for a diesel.
The best idea would be to spend a bit more and get a 94-99 Discovery with 300Tdi (2.5L turbo diesel) and ZF four speed auto. Came factory with a 7 seat option, economical, and a bit better value for money than a nissan or toyota.

With the cost of desiel over petrol ATM there is no benefit of diesel over petrol becuase even though diesel uses less fuel then petrol buy the time you take the cost of it in to account it would work out to aboutthe same, so you might aswell have power

MK/Q Patrols were available in auto.

Agreed with you for around town but then when you go bush you get stuff all range with the petrols. Supose you gotta break up how much bush and city driving you will do and decide from that. The crappy fuel consumption of my v8 disco means I will only do very few long trips.
Oh and family bus I would only get a seven seat disco if the kids are small. The little seats are very uncomfortable and apparently not very safe at all in accidents. I'm selling the 2 out of my disco if you want to buy them

Turbo diesel auto 60 series. Some had seven seats.
Just do all your home work on the engine condition etc and there is no reason you couldn't pick up a good one.
But I guess for the price you could maybe get petrol Patrol auto on gas aswell.
This sounds like they have a pretty small price range?
