Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Ok, Ive read quite a few threads about which tyres are great, but I dont remember any about which are bad. Here is your chance, name which tyres you would steer clear of, and why?

My choice of crappiest tyre of the century has to go to Kumho. I had a brand new one (1500km), well it had 0.4mm tread wear, blow out on me on the Bruce Highway a year or so ago. Kumho didnt want to know about it, ignored 3 emails, and I had to fight tooth and nail with the supplier to get any satisfaction. Now they say people who get bad service tell others, so here is how I do it. This appears on the back of my 4wd.

Bridgestone desert duelers, set that came with my car when i bought it were almost new and i got 2000km hard 4wheeling out of em b4 they were near bald

i think the winner is the Firestone allterrain !!!
( the ones fitted factory to FORD XPLODERS !!!)

none out here , but a sh!t load of warranty claims at Ford dealerships !!!

I got a full set ( out of the warranty bin , wen I workd 4 Ford ) $50 !!!!

Have to agree on the kumho's if they are not stripping belts they are shaped like this...

had a set on of kumho XT's on the cruiser which lasted 70 km's, [not 70 thousand] before the side wall fell off, looked like it had been cut out with a lathe.
lasted 1 hour from when i left the tyre shop

Never owned a set of Kumho's but have seen a set that looked just as Juzza described them. Not a good thing to drive on.

I have a set of kumho 33' x 12, 825 all terrains on me truck now 3 ply sidewall all be it very soft on my 80 series diesel. Comfort plus !

Wear appears to be acceptable and the price was miles in front of everything else !

Soaks up the bumps nicely (great on dirt roads) and if you keep the pressures right they shouldn't give you any dramas...

The kumho mud terrains that came on my 75 diesel, one of them was square..but they where near rooted as well

I did buy another set of some tyre..cant remember its name to think of it...but all of them were fuking square...even the two warranty ones they put on...fuk the were on special and put on via bob jane the theiving pricks... NO MATTER WHAT UNLESS YOU ABOSULTELY POSSITIVE DO HAVE TO BUY FROM A BOB JANE STORE >>>DONT !!!!

They fuked up countless wheel alignments and sell shit and @ stoopid prices...fuking bunch a idiots ..they tried to tell me these tyres they sold me were as good as bfg's and sold them to me at the same price as bfg's untill i got the wiser...they bought them at $140 each and sold them including the special "bob jane balance & wheel alignment" for a $1040

Yokahama Super digger Vs. These were oem on my F'terra. Couldn't even grip on dry tar!!!! Did make good smoke though!!!!!! *HEHE*

BFG A/Ts

I know most people thing these are the bomb but I think they are the tire choice of the uneducated 4WDer.

My mate had a set on his 4runner (old style, pre KOs) and I used to be shiat scared riding in that thing in the wet as it used to turn into an ice skate under brakes. :shocked!:

Work mate has a new set on his GQ, no more than 10,000klms old, about 1/4 of that medium offroad and they are cut to shiat. Tread blocks are shreaded.

Considering their elevated price, I wouldn't touch em with a 10 foot poll.

Im gonna add another to the list, Olympic Overlanders. I had a set that I would have got only about 35-40000 k's out of, no where as bad as the Kumho crap, but getting up there in the bad value for money stakes. This on a medium weight 4by.

yeh BFG A/Ts .... brand new set on my rig when I bought it ... prolly got 6 months out of them and they're slippery as all F#$k in the wet ...
great fun if u want to play though

got the STT's next ... they only lasted 12 months ... once they got down to bout 15-20% they became really slippery in the wet too ... off road
air'd down ... great on all the mud and rocks here ... tended to rip lugs off though with the lockers in ...

got BFG M/Ts now ... had them on over 12 months still got 40-50% on them and I've given them hell .... pull up in a hurry to even in the wet
they're alright on rocks and mud when let down to 15psi
think I'll just use these for road tyres now ...

simex ETs for off road once I get my rig finished and back on the road
got a nice deal for them now

I ordered a set of BFG Muddies from Boob Jane - the stupid tit got me Yokohama 826's....after MUCH agrument I eventually agreed to try them - and hated 'em from day one...shit onroad (big unsiped blocks) & crap offorad (the block were too closely places) the only good thing was they wore really fast so I was able to replace 'em a year later....

I had BFG A/Ts on the zook and they were shithouse...even the slightest bit of wet road and they would lose traction...my MTRS are quieter and handle better onroad then they did...not to mention being a million times better off road

Goodyear Wranglers are shite, only lasted 30,000km and by the time they were 50% tread you could not stay in a straight line on gravel.
Dunlop AT2's while good traction wore very quickly, could only get 40,000km out of them.
Michelin LTX M/S while they did wear well, they could not handle wet bitumen and had soft sidewalls - 8 punctures in 3 weeks with no weekend driving.

dunlop grandtreks, had a set on the 80 and they sucked, shit in the wet and no chance of 4x4ing. now own a set of bfg m/t 315/75/16 all i caan say is MAD!!! best tyre i have ever owned

I assume you are talking about an A/T pattern in the range as there are 11 different treads in the Wrangler model.

Have to agree with the wrangler At's they are the standard tyre on the TJ Jeeps and it was one of the first things I did and replaced them with a set of Cooper ST's which I found to be very good on the TJ. The coopers may have been better on the TJ because of the weight factor, I could see them on a Toyo or Niss being a bit suspect.

Let's not forget the good old Kelly, soory not sure of the mark of tyre but the "muddie" tyres, nice and cheap and nasty. Have heard of a few guys only getting about 10k out of these things before the side wall was looking like an early eighties super model (way to thin).

I gotta admit, my Kelly DTR's were unreal.......I got 'bout 60 or 70 thousand k's from 'em and now Ferwoaza is driving on them. I haven't heard that he's had any probs with 'em.
They were on a Feroza.....maybe the body weight has a lot to do with differnt tyres.

Got some 35" Centipedes ATM..........only complaint........
