cooling cap for 24V winches

I have just come across these on bigballsoffroad & saw one on a rig in a mag..

are these for highmount winches only?

Should be suitable for low mount as well.

To be honest a series motor on a winch is consuming around 4kw(max) , the only thing that is going to keep 4kw a lot cooler would have to be a lot bigger heatsink wise or water cooled, i would put your money elesware unless you were having overheating problems with the winch

now for my 2 silly ideas = use one of the bigger CPU heatsinks or a chunk of thick radiator core

a cpu heat shink cools about 300W-450W (over estimated), even two wouldnt make much difference,

A lot of the guys run air through thier motors to help keep them cool. Just tap in 2 vacuum lines. 1 in and 1 out to a breather. The guys at leslie and sons say to use an air horn pump that switches on with the isolator. The idea of this is you can run it when the truck is parked between stages and the air will still flow through and keep cooling the motor down.

The BigBalls heatsink increases the surface area which is exposed to air, to help heat transfer out of the motor. With a high mount the hot air can escape quite easily, so the heatsink will work reasonably well.

If you put the cap on a low mount, and the hot air is trapped inside the bull bar, it won't do much at all. You've gotta give the heat somewhere to go - remembering it wants to go up.

Even one of those el-cheapo air mattress inflators - you don't need pressure, just flow to carry the heat away.

A setup like this could help minimise water ingress too. If you don't want to drill and tap the motor housing, just blowing fresh air across the outside will help - but not as much.

My winch is down with dave metcalfe getting prepped for comps so as soon as I get it back I'll post some pics. :D

Read in the 4wd monthly yearbook from 03' that a guy had tapped in a liquid nitrogen feed into the housing of his winch to keep it cool :cool: ,overkill maybe but definantly worth it id imagine... :D

I use one of these little jobbies around the motor -

$25US + freight. Just make sure you round out the areas near the motor's elec connections to avoid shorting. This with air from the truck tank to a tapped alloy motor cap and gearbox breather out keeps the little 2.5hp chugging :)

They work well on an oil filter too.

hey guys ive just been looking at running an airline from my air reservoir, it will just have a line through the cab with a flow adjustor tap in the cab, once the winch hits water or is being operated. i can just open up the line, this will run small and adjustable amount of air through the casing of the winch, and then out another line in the casing, to atmosphere through a silencer. the aim of this is to keep positive pressure inside the winch, to stop water getting in, and also allowing some air to run through and cool the winch.. will this work, and had anyone done this before.??? its just what i plan on doing, and ive bought what is nessecary to build it. but i think im entering unknown territory, with a blindfold on. i hope it works..

Hey std80,

Yep great idea.Pretty common on the winching scene (from what I have observed still being a rope driving noob).

I had an alloy cap spun up for mine (with 2x alternator-sized roller bearings to replace the brass bush in the factory cast cap) and tapped a air line fitting to it for the same purpose. Winch hasn't cooked yet (2.5hp 8274) or sucked in mud.

If you don't have it already you might want a storage tank to prime and to feed your winch air line from save drawing extra current running the aircomp.

yeagh i have a tank ill be installing very shortly. before the winch goes in.. its about 10 litres. i like the idea of the machined alloy casing. with bearings. i might haveto machine one up.
