Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I just bought a new oil filter for my 97 zuke which has a barina engine in it. however is still a g13ba. I had 2 options for oil filters as per the vehicles on the box.
Oil filter A) suited 1000cc sierra, barina up to 1994 and swift up to 1994. and daihatus.
oil filter B) suited 1.3 liter sierras from 84-96.

from what I am aware there was no change in the engine (exept timing belt pullys and waterpumps etc from the early 90s to the last coilys.) I ended up buying oil filter (a) however its much shorter then the one I had. I assume both would have fit as they are the same blocks.

why would this be?

I think (A) only is for the 1ltr motors as the swift and barina came out with a 1ltr motor up to that time i think.

you would think that would be specified if true as the 1.3 motors were also available at the time.

shorter ones are because swift engine is east-west, so less room fer the filter sticking out the front...a guess only. christover

yea i did think it might have something to do with the mounting of the engine. although it still doesnt explain why it specified 1 liter sierras for that filter.

I forgot to mention I fitted the barina filter and it screwed strait on. no leaks. perhaps the belief that sierras get a harder workout so need a bigger filter?

why, i cant help you with.. but... if i was in your position, id stick on the bigger one... probably get better filtration and more flow =P

The correct oil filter for a G13A/BA engine is a Z172 (usually the industry known P/No. by Ryco) which you would say is the longer one. Also suits G16A and H20/25A engines. It will also fit an F10A engine.

It comes down to the amount of room available. I have a std. filter, a long one, and a remote oil filter to which I fit a ford V8 canister. The remote allows this fitment. And the Ford filter is huge.

WE USE 3 different filters on all the engines..

basically one is longer, one is shorter,the other is short but fat..

they all fit, they all work....

Well my dads mates daughter got a barina and the engine looked similar to my Sierra and it was a Suzuki engine, he also said swifts had pretty much the same engine, only difference seemed to be it was East-West. So I'd presume the 1 litre engine from barina and swift are similar to the 1 litre Sierra engine, so you can use it on all of them.

ive never heard of a 1 liter barina or swift I thought they were all 1.3 and yes the engines are exactly the same exept for the camshft which is suited to a different distributer. the sump may also be different?

1lt swift.. plenty of them.. they are simply 3 cylander (same bore as the 4 cyleanders i think )

I use a stubbie filter it was a ryco and it listed both 1lt and 1.3lt and screwed straight on...

Now i'm sure it could be argued that a longer one does extra filtering but i plan on changing my oil ever 5000kms instead of every 12000kms so a bigger filter is probably not all that crucial to reducing engine wear.. but then again i could be wrong

But yeah next time i change it if the price is close enough to the same i'll go for the larger one.

What would be interesting is what is the best filter out there for the sierra... is it a OEM, Ryco, Valvoline or insert-other-brand-name


In the states i know K&N also make oil filters that are superior, howver don't know if they make it for the suzuki (be interesting if a rebadged suzuki like a geo or chevy did)

Now that I actually think about it the Barina did have a 1.3 ltr I think, plus it has EFI as another difference to my Sierra. But as I said just a guess and from what Santos said they do make a 1 ltr Swift... maybe a Barina as well. But why wouldn't the 1.3 swifts and barinas use a Sierra filter then...?


The K&N site lists an oil filter for the Sierra. I'd imagine it would be expensive though.

Yes that right... I am a poor ass.

Smaller filters usually keep a better head of oil above them after you turn the motor off. In other words, when you fire up, the oil takes less time to lube the overhead gear etc. =less wear. I change them out at 5000 kms-cheap insurance.
