I just changes my gearbox oil to VMX 80 and added nulon gearbox treatment. I dont know whats working the magic but my gearbox is much quieter, changing to second has lost its notchines. and I can change down to first in slowmoving traffic rather then having to clutch second gear till I get enough speed so as not to labor the engine.

My car also feels more gutsy but that could be my imagination or as a result of changing the engine oil. I also added nulon worn engine treatment. seems to have quetened the tappets and cam. time will tell if it reduces oil consumption and various otehr claims. etc

Im interested as to what oether peoples experiences are with these kinds of additives. have you found them to be economoical and effective, (or are they about as useful as hiclones?)

I've always had good results from nulon additives.
In a small car, power loss happens easily, so you can gain power from new oils in my opinion.
Mine always goes better with fresh oil, including diffs and t-case and box.
I'm using very thick engine oil, now, and most smoke has gone. 40-70 I think, but its a little too thick, its slowing my idle, may go a little thinner fer winter.

Have run Nulon additives before in diffs and motors, and they seem to be okay. Made my old rear loose most of its noise (till i killed it ) and seems to make my engine behave better. I too use thick oil in my motor with additive (motor is next to dead). Makes it much smoother i rekon and gets rid of noise.

ive run the octane booster / cleaner one before... didnt notice a massive difference really as i already run nothing but 98 ron fuel - but it did seem to climb up the rev range smoother (not as noisy).... but then its also a fully reco'd engine and only has 30,000km on it.

ive used different additives in my past cars and did notice some made a difference. I've treated every engine ive had (except the sierra) with Slick 50 and have had 4cly engines last for 300,000kms without any signs of wear until i sold it. its expensive ($75) but worth it. also have used many octane boosters but noticed bugger all improvements.

i've used the nulon additives. my old gear box used to leak oil out of the main shaft. it was really bad when going up step hills for a long time in low range, the oil used to run out and then drip on the exhaust. cause i was to lazy to pull the gear box out i added some nulon stuff. after that i never had a problem with the oil leaking out. Also added some to the engine and it quieten it down a fair bit.

I am using Mobil SHC XMP 220 synthetic gear oil. $300.00+ per 20 litres but well worth it. Will withstand even sea water contamination! Designed for gearboxes that may NEVER be serviced during their operating life. The 220 is the SAE rating but it is like silk not heavy as you would imagine. A 5.14 gearset has fairly radical gears and mine were a little more noisy from new than Series 1's that they replaced, but this stuff quietened them O.K. Check it out on Esso Mobil's site.

VMX80 and Nulon Treatment worked a treat in my GV.. Good stuff!

just done this on the weekend and i must say its well work the 30 bucks

I found that it has got better again with a bit of driving. given it a chance to run into the gearbox. I dont notice when the gearbox is cold anymore.

i added nulon to mine and it seemed to quieten it down a fair bit. im not sure wat oil is in it as it has been there since i got it. i allso run some nulon in the engine oil and recently put some in the feul to cleen out my carby.

what is the full name of the oil you have used muppet_man67 is it just VMX80 and does it come in a bottle which can easily be pored into the gear box??

Easily poured into a gearbox is a great idea, but not a happening thing unless you want to do some dismantling (not worth the effort)

The best method is to use a big syringe and plastic tubing. You can buy the actual tool (looks like a grease gun with a hose attached) from most spare parts stores from around the $30 mark. Using this method you can measure out how much you are putting in and complete an oil change on gearbox, transfer case and both diffs quickly with bugger all mess. Especially if you are adding Nulon or the like, you can measure the quantity before you fill the box. What a waste if you put oil in first and the the expensive additive leaks out becuse you have over filled.

Yes Ryan. You can remove shifters and access the top of the gear box though not the easiest way to go about things. The time it would take to do this (especially if carpet gets in the way), you could have changed all oils with a syringe, and more precise. But hey sometimes we have all done things by whatever means available when it was a choice between paying someone or doing ourselves.

$75 for slick 50??? WTH?? It's only $20 here in the US. It can't be the same stuff. Do I need to start exporting the stuff and making a huge profit on the stuff??

Its casrol VMX 80 it is in an easy pur bottle but you wont be able to use it as the filler hole is ubstructed. I used a tom thumb hand pump. which is basicly a pump in a 1l bottle with a tupe the you stick in the filler hole. I you want a better quality oil then VMX 80 try castol syntrax. I was going to buy it but they had none. its about twice the price but reports are it is very godo.

I changed my oil in the gearbox, transfer and both diffs and noticd a big difference even without additives. the diffs hadnt been changed for a while bcoz one of the previous owners had rounded out the filler caps so they couldnt be removed. I had to get new ones because all of the ones in wreckers are all the same. A common problem aparently, soft metal.
I highly recomend the TOM THUMB pump bottle it helps so much, i only paid $20 for mine though. Well worth the money!

i use the lucas oil additives and i found them to be fantastic i used to have an old hilux which was blowing smoke and using a lot of oil and was a bit gutless and after i added the lucas additive it stopped smoking, it used a lot less oil and it had a vast improvement in performance and fuel ecconemy
