Probably the brushes warn out in the alternator, they're pretty easy to replace.

the problem that i have is that i bought the car about 8mths ago and the fella that i bought it off said that it was a new/reco alternater, and i cant get hold of the guy to find out where it was done. I have tested and replaced the regulater because it was showing faults but that didnt fix the problem, so... any other ideas whould be helpful ;)

cheers

The same sort of thing has happened in my 80 series when going through deep dirty muddy water. Apparently some chunks of mud and dirt get in where the brusehes make contact and doesn't allow contact meaning your alternator can't charge your battery. In the bush it has been suggested driving aggressively through clear water, but it can be taken off and cleaned.

how much have you guys paid to get a reco alternator, i was in at autobarn the other day and out of curisoity (you know the thing that killed the cat) and they said that i am looking at 800-900 dollars!!!! that seems a little bit rude, so any ideas on what you guys have paid would be good

To get it reco'd should only cost $300, i think they quoted you on a brand new one. Take the alternator out yourself and go and give it to an auto elec and they will do it or if your lucky swap with you on the spot. Should only take them a day to reco it.

i have got the problem fixed, the lights that were coming on all earthed throught the alternator, took the alternator out and gave it to an auto elec, what happened is that the guy that did it before i bought it didnt line the brushes up properly and its worn the bushes down uneven and werent making contact. Had to get a new bearing in it and brusehes but its back in and i can drive it again  so all is good in the universe

thanks for the help
