PTO winch on my GQ shorty

I had to recover a mate and his broken lux on friday night from the top of the track that goes straight from where you chuck a right turn to the bottom of the tower of terror at ormeau and was winching him up nice and gently when my winch just went blaahhhh and decided to spray oil out over the front of the car and get itself in a nice mess. It seemed to work after it spewed oil out but i went the safe option and snatched him the rest of the way. Aside from most likely crapping a seal would the shear pins need replacing as well...other peoples thunks/ experiences??

sounds like it got hot, and blew the oil out of a seal, there should be a breather, i'd just find the breather, unblock it, replace the seals and oil and it should be ok.

The breather is the thing on top of the gearbox that looks like a flattened grease nipple.
These winchs require a special oil, not EP or HP as this will damage the Bronze gears and thrusts in the winch.
If there is Hypoid oil in the winch it will boil out under low load.
I'm told the correct oil is 600 weight as used on steam engines.

Sir Rollsalot,
When the winch starts to chatter like that, throw a pulley block in the system cos you're getting close to breaking a shear pin.

JTop,
We looked into this after our last PTO discussions.....got hold of some steam train people who said 600 weight is almost like grease and they suggested an alternative brew. Its a 50/50 mix which includes good old red-label Morey's engine oil stabiliser. Have been running it for a month or so now, ran recovery at Superwinch comp with no dramas, but time will tell.

thanks for the info guys. Now I just gotta find time to fix it up, any idea where I can get that 'special' oil instead of no good darn tooting normal 600 oil

Nothing too special about it unfortunately.... is a 50/50 blend of Caltex 85/140 and Morey Heavy Oil Stabiliser (red label) available from Repco.
That was added when the new winch gears were installed 4 weeks ago. Had 3 days hard use doing recovery at the Superwinch comp, and a few club trips (with winching) since then. Gearbox isn't getting hot like it used to...so far, so good.
Make sure you rotate the g-box end cap 180 degrees too, as it places the filler plug higher up and increases oil capacity.

Is this stuff for the worm drive end. As mine has a big cast ends to it. With a fill at very top and drain on the bottom. Will take a pic later.

Would you get away with 100% Moreys?

Turps,
I've emailed you a close-up pic of the winch head. It is the worm drive end. Filler plug is on the side at approx 2 o'clock position.
Cheers

Well as the email I sent to you mines different. May have to phone Powerauto and ask them. I did know the oil it needed as a 4b shop in gippsland changed it for me a couple of times.
But heres a pic of my winch.
